More about Fleas!!!

Natural Remedies for Dogs
By Martin Zucker
ISBN 0-609-80372-7

Even though flea allergies are the most common allergies, holistic veterinarians often comment that healthy animals are less likely to be “flea magnets.”
The key to resistance, they emphasize, is feeding a superior diet.

As Willian Pollak, DVM, says: “The best flea control is a vital animal that radiates health and fitness, an animal consuming fresh, wholesome food and living in a good, natural balance with its environment.
The presence of fleas is an indication that you need to create greater life energy in your pet."

Florida, with its heat, moisture, and sandy soil, is a paradise for fleas. Yet Florida veterinarian Joseph Demers, DVM, says that dogs who are healthy just don’t attract the fleas, or if they do, it is minimal. The same holds true with the wild animals who are brought in. The weak ones are full of fleas, ticks, and parasites.
He says, the stronger ones are much less affected.
"The weak ones are full of fleas, ticks, and parasites"
well, being full of fleas & ticks will make you weak.
hard to say which came first.
and we've known cats on excellent diets that had fleas in great numbers.

as for the strong ones not having fleas, same reasoning. The abscence of them is going to contribute to good health. Perhaps the owners are doing more than just giving them a good diet, but are bathing them or using better flea protection than the others.

I think he has some backward thinking here.

Bendy kitty
Animal put into an area of heavy parasites will pick them up.
The condition of the animal is a very big factor, and a fat animal is not always a healthy animal.
We who are working to maintain health in our problem animal can see that we have to medicate, and supply supplements to gain, and maintain health.

I have seen animals out all winter in conditions at zero, and below. By the time spring came there body fat had dropped off, but they were still in good health with no pests.

Many times I have seen animals that were not given the best balance of nutrition. They had the look of health, and were fat.
Under this type of body condition many of them were so loaded down with body lice, from a distance they looked gray instead of the brown or black color they should have.

Malnutrition can be found with big bellies. I have seen animals skinny and loaded with ticks, standing in canary grass 3 feet tall.

Optimum health is not measured in poundage. It will create a condition of resistance to pests.
In my opinion the writer of this book has some good points.

There are many possible diseases that fleas can carry including epidemic typhus and bubonic plague. For the treatment of fleas, home remedies can be a hassle and usually do not work. Letting a trained professional handle the situation is the best, smartest, and quickest way to remove the fleas from the infested area.
