If you care for an elderly, injured or special needs pet, you've come to the right place!
A friend has a cat with arthritis. She also has always had an usual gait with her hind legs more widely spread than is usual. She takes glucosamine and fish oil which were recommended by a vet. Some people believe that she is pain. How does one tell? I have heard that cats are less likely to show pain than dogs.
She is about fourteen years old. She eats well and is a good weight. She uses her litter box except when she is constipated. She doesn't appear to have any other health problems. She sleeps most of the day and does not play. She has never liked to be held or cuddled but she frequently lays down in the middle of the room on her back expecting a good belly rub. Any ideas on how we can tell if she is in pain?
It sounds like she is OK if she is eating and getting around and seeking attention. My arthritic kitty loved to lie on a heating pad set on low, you might ask your friend if she'd like to try that. (Some heating pads on low are hotter than others, you need to check whether it should be wrapped in a towel, mine was fine with just a flannel cover.)
I agree that she doesn't sound too bad. My ancient one didn't play either, but I think she just didn't want to. She kept on doing her normal things until she didn't, which is whenI knew she was failing.
We have had a number of senir rescue cats with arthritis to variing degrees. MSM is an anti-inflammatory that has been of big benefit here, you give it daily and can get it at any pharmacy or health food store. 500mg/day for the first couple weeks then 250mg/day, it doesn't have to be an exact dose. if it is a tablet you can crush it and put it in/on her food.
there are a lot of pet suppliments for joints that contain MSM amongst other things and really do help. If she gets to the point where she is having trouble getting around you can talk to the vet about prednisone or metacam.
