carol...i finished the blog.
i'm not sure what else there is to say there.

i still have two chickens.
don't scoff...they were hand raised in the house. they're really quite friendly and interesting characters, tho i wouldn't call them pets.
i'm babysitting a cat for the next few days. she is aloof and likes to pee on things...so not such good company.

other than that...yes.
alone in the house.

a friend of ours has chickens and it has been quite surprising to learn what good company they are.
mom raised soem chicks and they were al ot of fun. they make all kinds of fun noises and follow you around and talk to you (well, hers stayed ina big aquarium they wren't allowed to wander around the house).

her friend had a rooster get injured and he stayed in the house over the winter, he wore a diaper and was quite a friendly guy. he was blind in one eye but made do OK. he was a big buff cochon.
mom had a pair of silkies for a while at her friend's house. the rooster is still there, something got the hen, sadly.

what kind of chickens do you have?

Tessa, I don't know if anyone else does this...might be too difficult or silly, but after one of my babies leaves their earthlife, I get a little "treasure box" & any time I find something that belonged to them, or reminds me of them (mailed notices w/ their name), photos, favorite toys, collars, tags...I put it in the box and put it away. Then as time passes & I'm able to remember with a smile intstead of sobs, I sit down to cherish my memory pet.

My 1st box goes back to 1988 when my 1st rescue "Manny" (a german sheperd) died in my arms at home when he was 17. He was my Xena. I'm so glad I still have his box and all the others since then. Course, at my rate of rescues I may need to have a room added on to hold them all.

Oh, & I forgot ...I have a pet chicken, too., at my office. A little red hen "HennyPenny" abandoned by her owners that moved. None of the other chickens survived. When I drive up she comes running. She knows her name & loves one of my dogs named Spike (rotty mix). They're buds! I also had an abandoned goldfish, Mr. Fishy...that's a story for another post...but he just joined Manny a few weeks ago - swimming in heaven.

that sounds like a good idea.
maybe i'll start a treasure box.

carol...i just re-read your post.
i see i missed the point.
the answer is: yes. of course. the blog stays up.
it was always going to stay up...whether or not xena's experience was a success story.
there's really not much out there. i saw the need. i've done my bit to try to fill it.
xena did her bit too...beating the odds and dying more of age than cancer...tho it was the cancer that cut her life short.
but she proved to the world...there is life after cancer. life after amputation.
and a lot of it.

I wear Andy's ashes in a locket on my neck. I have Possum's fur from her last brushing but still haven't decided what to do with it. I kept Allix' collar which I had hanging on my rear view mirror for ages and put it on Jude when I brought him home. These keepsakes are impossibly important and poignant. We never want to forget that love we shared in the most magical time of our lives. We want to remember it every day.
I don't know nothin about chickens, but I did name my goldfish who Igot really attached to, and would watch as I drifted off to sleep.

Anshar's ashes, mixed with dust from Ninga's grave are in a small container on mom's keychain.

she trims the whiskers and some fur off each kit when they die and keeps it in a ziplock.

she saves any teeth that are extracted to keep for after we leave her.

little things like that mean a lot to us.

the webpages we make are extremely helpful. we also do photo collages around the house and, when mom's hands allow, she paints picts of us.
