Salmonella Recall of Dogsbutter dog peanut butterSunland, Inc. has announced a voluntary recall of its Almond Butter and Peanut Butter, which it has now expanded to include a dog product — Dogsbutter RUC with Flax PB. The products being recalled were manufactured between May 1, 2012 and September 24, 2012, and may be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections.
The dog product being recalled, Dogsbutter RUC with Flax PB, 16 oz, UPC Code 003050, was distributed nationally to numerous stores and was available for purchase on the internet. (The UPC is located on the side of the jar’s label below the bar code.) The recall was initiated after the company read a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report that stated that 29 people reported Salmonella-related illnesses in approximately 18 states, including Washington, California, Arizona, Texas, Louisiana, Missouri, Illinois, Minnesota, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New York, Rhode Island, North Carolina, Virginia, Connecticut, New Jersey and Maryland, between June 11, 2012 and September 2, 2012. If you purchased Dogbutter or any of the other products recalled shown here http://www.fda.gov/Safety/Recalls/ucm320818.htm, do not eat them or give them to your dog. Please return the product to the store for a refund or throw it away. Salmonella can affect both humans and animals. You can become infected by simply handling the treats, especially if you have not thoroughly washed your hands after having contact with the treats or any surfaces exposed to the products. Healthy people infected with Salmonella may experience… ■nausea ■vomiting ■diarrhea or bloody diarrhea ■abdominal cramping ■fever Although rare, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments including… ■arterial infections ■endocarditis (inflammation of the lining of the heart) ■arthritis ■muscle pain ■eye irritation ■urinary tract symptoms If you have any of these signs after having contact with this product, contact your doctor immediately. Pets with Salmonella infections may show… ■lethargy ■diarrhea or bloody diarrhea ■fever ■vomiting Some pets may only experience a decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans.
