Dog knows he has to go potty but cant, help!

Postby poodlemixmama82 » Sat Sep 22, 2012 3:21 pm

Hi ya'll, my 6 year old schnoodle was diagnosed with IVDD last Friday night. We're on meds and crate rest, he's doing pretty good BUT we're having trouble expressing him. In fact we havent been able to, he knows he has to go he can feel it (I know this cause he whines) but up until now I thought maybe he just didnt want to go on the potty pad on his bed.

We've tried taking him out and although his back legs are stronger, he still doesnt want to put all his weight on his right front leg. Not only that but his back legs are too tense making it hard for him to squat. Has anyone else had this problem? They know they have to go but can't voluntarily? Thanks!

Thanks for the link, read it awhile back and it's not working for us and watched tons of videos on youtube. I was hoping someone could tell me whether or not their dog had the same problem and how they dealt with it.

Talk to your vet; there are a couple of medications that can relax the muscles of the bladder so that they can be expressed/or go on their own. (Usually the former.) Phenoxybenzamine and bethanechol are the two I know about.

The bladder will probably overflow before that but don't let it go any longer than you have to as UTIs are a real concern and can be fatal.

Thanks, just called the ER and before they can prescribe anything they want to make sure there isn't anything else going on with the nerves in that area. So I guess back to the ER we go!
