IVDD Research UC Davis: YOU can help! Update 6/15

Post by Cindidoxiemom » Sun Apr 22, 2007 6:05 pm

I have known Linda for several years. She and many others have worked tirelessly to find the cause, and ultimately a cure for IVDD. Please read the following message from Linda....YOU and your pup can help!
Cindi
IVDD RESEARCH AT THE UNIVERSITY OF CA - DAVIS

Hello:

My name is Linda Stowe and I'm the founder of Dodgerslist, http://www.dodgerslist.com a group organized to help fight IVDD in Dachshunds, a breed where the average of 19%+ have this terrible disease.

A few years ago we contacted a researcher, Dr. Mark Neff, at the Univ of CA Davis and asked them to do gene research for IVDD. They agreed and at this time, they have over 1000 Dachshund cheek swabs.

At the present time, they would like other breeds who have a high incidence of IVDD in their breed also. You can learn more about their research at http://www.dodgerslist.com/index/IVDDHandout.htm . I would like to ask your help in helping Dr. Neff find an answer for our Dachshunds and other breeds as well.

If you would like to help, please email me at lstowe@uiuc.edu . I will send you 4 cheek swabs with instructions and a short questionnaire along with a postage paid envelope to send them directly back to Davis. This is very easy to do. If you can send verification of IVDD from a vet, that would help also.

If you can help, please contact me and I'll send you the swabs. Together we can find an answer to this terrible disease. I hope for a speedy and full recovery for your dog.

I just talked to Linda. She thanked those of you who have contacted her, and wanted to let you know that cross posting is encourgaged.

We have often felt helpless when dealing with our IVDD pups. Here is a way you can make a REAL difference.
Thank you to those who have responded...you and your pup may be providing the sample that unlocks this NASTY disease.
Hugs,
Cindi

Cindi,

I have a mixed doxie-beagle (weegle). Do they want cheek swabs from the mixed breed puppers too?

Dianne...
Just email Linda...
For the last couple year or so they only wanted dachshunds...now they want all breeds.
If she doesn't want mixies now...I bet they will soon.
Just drop Linda a message. She is a very nice lady.
Hugs!

This is just a reminder that if you haven't contacted Linda to get your IVDD pupper doodle in the study and you want to...please do. This is a contribution that may actually lead us to finding the cause and cure for IVDD.

Hugs,

As far as we know that research has been discontinued- the researcher left UCD and nothing more has happened in the last few years. If anyone knows any more about it, I'd love to know.
