Can cats be born with urinary retention problems?Someone learned of Sasha online and directed me to a 1 y/o male Persian that was born with urinary retention. He is has CH (cerebellar hypoplasia), but an extremely mild case (waddles a little like a duck, but nothing remarkably out of the ordinary). He jumps well, eats normally, plays normally and is extraordinarily affectionate. He's one of those kitties you could carry by his tail and he would still purr.
The CH is not a problem and not concerned about that. What I am concerned about is his complete inability to urinate on his own since birth. A vet adopted him when he was about 3 months old and has been caring for him ever since. He was dumped by his breeder in a shelter after 3 months of antibiotics, catheters, etc... and where the vet rescued him from. The @#$8!!! breeder also had the poor thing declawed, which annoys me more than anything. I have visited "Red" twice and tried expressing him under the tutelage of his vet/owner, but because he's a little chubby, not anywhere near as easy to express as Sasha was. He also needs to be stimulated at the same time the bladder is expressed or he will not urinate. The vet is a lovely young woman with her own practice. The entire facility is immaculate and without a male in sight, a tender feminine touch radiates throughout. The vet said she has tried placing him 3 times, but everyone winds up returning him because they cannot express his bladder. She said all tests, x-rays, sonograms and exams have shown nothing abnormal or a blockage anywhere. Seems Red was simply born this way. My question is, is it possible to be born like this? I want to adopt him, but my gut instinct feels something is being held back from me, but I can't seem to put my finger on it, thus I am presenting this here for some input. His current vet/owner is also willing to provide free lifetime services and boarding for him if one goes away or needs a break. She really loves the kitty and you can see how she handles him and how protective of him she is. She said she just can not commit to another animal at this time and just wants a really good home for him. Welcoming all and any opinions. Re: Can cats be born with urinary retention problems?Hmm. Well, just because they have CH doesn't preclude another disability. I wonder if he has a muscle spasm in his urethra making a semi-blockage? Have they tried phenoxybenzamine to ease expressing?
Re: Can cats be born with urinary retention problems?Hi Critters,
Just received an email from the vet and she said the foster home where Red spends weekends has decided to permanently adopt him. Would have been nice if she had mentioned their interest earlier as I was all ready to adopt - little problems and all. Two heartbreaks in one month. Perhaps for the best with Red - who knows...
