So glad to hear you did your homework to know what questions need to be asked and when to question things. Kudos to you! It really sounds like with the care you are giving, that is helping Momo to go in a really good direction of healing! Here are some extra things you can do at home to help with a ...

Re: shih-tzu suddenly lost use of his legs- any help appreci

Hi SLojnreop! Do you have a question about your dog we can help you with? If you suspect a disc problem, the correct thing is to immediately limit movement by using a crate and getting to the vet for a diagnosis, and meds to protect the spinal cord. You can find a great deal of up to date info on co...

Re: HELP PLEASE !

Mem, how is Honey this morning, is the tramadol fully keeping pain away? No shivering, no reluctance to move, no yelps? How are you doing, too? I was trying to think outside the box on Honey's care. When you are delivering, who will take care of you two little ones? Would that person also be able to...

Re: Suggestions on how to handle a new pet being paralized?

The single most important care you can give Meko with a current disc problem is to provide him with a full 8 weeks of crate rest from the date of injury. The medications given are to address pain and to bring swelling down in the spinal cord. There are no meds that help a disc to fully heal over and...

Re: Please help with bathroom issues

Going to a certain spot in the yard and then releasing urine does sounds like bladder control. Some male dogs just do not like anything touching the penis area at potty time.... so it could be the saddle of the cart is something that he needs to get used to. With small dogs I am used to, instead of ...

Please help with bathroom issues

<snip> Protect his legs and paws from abrasions. I don't have a picture of how he moves about.... walks, or drags his legs behind or does he scoot? Maybe some of these links will give you some useful ideas: http://www.tammyandteddys.com/ http://www.dogleggs.com/files/rear.cfm http://www.dodgerslist....

Re: Need advice-My shep diagnoised 5/29 bad disc Cant walk

Jan, the single most important thing in a spinal cord injury is to restrict movement. Jazmin needs to be in a crate. No more stairs, too much stress on the spine. http://www.dodgerslist.com/lit/CrateRRP.htm If you have the ability to get Jazmin to a board certified neuro or ortho surgeon tonight, do...

Kim, it really is way too soon to begin *any* PT/massage on Haley. Too much risk that she will turn a bit too much and cause the vertebrae to press on the bad disc that is in the process of healing. As CarolC said the back is not to be disturbed. The most important thing right now is crate rest to t...

Monica, while many neurosurgeons do ok tail walking, I'm like Critters and prefer a sling (long scarf, ACE bandage, wide belt.) For one thing a sling will save you from backaches. Make sure you also use a harness. No more collars as they are too stressful for the spine. Here is a picture of how to d...

A cart needs to be constructed to the measurement of each dog, is not a good idea to borrow a cart. Have you talked with Eddie's Wheels to get an idea of various cart options, detachable front training wheels, etc. http://www.eddieswheels.com/ Carts are used for a couple of hours at a time, not as a...
