Re: Labrador L5 IVDD post surgery

The whelping pad is a savior. I still take her out every 2 hours to see if she can pee alone. I’ve put her back on gabapentin and prazosin, even with those meds she cries and barks and whines for hours mid day. Eventually the meds kick in and she falls asleep and pees. I’m not able to express her. S...

Re: Labrador L5 IVDD post surgery

Lola had her cath out 3 days ago, has UTI but seems more chipper since starting antibiotics. She seems to hold urine for a bit and then it spills out when she’s full? Hard to tell if the lack of control is from the long term cath or from uti. Hoping she gets control back as she heals. She def has bo...

Re: Urinary cath removes today, won’t pee and whining

She's really crying a lot, it's very concerning. I don't know what to expect while we "ride it out". She seems to be in a LOT of pain.

Re: Urinary cath removed today, won’t pee and whining

We went to the vet at 7p, they expressed her bladder to about 6cm. They said she was very tense/painful. Came home, still whining/panting, went back at 11p, they expressed her again, abdominal xray showed a lot of gas and stool. Sent home on flagyl (for possible GI virus? which doesn't make sense to...

Urinary cath removes today, won’t pee and whining

My lab Lola had urinary cath for 10 weeks after IVDD surgery, removed today. Can’t pee, full bladder, whining nonstop for 3 hours. I can’t express her. Vet said to wait until tomorrow. What can I do?

Re: Labrador L5 IVDD post surgery

The physical therapist thinks she is "giving up". They are unable to work on her legs, particularly the right knee/hip because she gets very upset. I am also unable to do any kind of range of motion exercises. Looks like she's developed contractures in the right leg. Minimal joint mobility...

Re: Labrador L5 IVDD post surgery

Sorry for a double post/all my questions....why does my dog obsessively lick her rectum? She never bothered her feet, at least so far; probably the gabapentin helped. But if I leave her alone without a cone, she will lick/bite her rectum. I keep her clean with "sensitive dog wipes" I buy f...

Re: Labrador L5 IVDD post surgery

Thanks Carol, I will order this so I'll be ready for future :) For dog's with indwelling urinary catheter, is it normal to have some sediment or mucus floating in the bag? I think we have had 4 bags in the past 2 months, but that means we are still reusing a bags very frequently, and there's no way ...

Re: Labrador L5 IVDD post surgery

Luckily my boyfriend works from home and will be able to take her out frequently. (Also, the living room is on the ground floor, bedrooms upstairs...so now we basically live 100% downstairs). What is whelping bedding? Currently she is on an egg crate mattress, covered with a trash bag (in case there...

Re: Labrador L5 IVDD post surgery

Thanks again for the replies! I think Lola has developed a UTI, her urine is very dark and foul smelling. The surgeon is starting her on an antibiotic today, he said he didn’t need to see her. She’s panting and seems uncomfortable. Hopefully she feels better soon. I’ve bought some pumpkin purée in c...

Re: Labrador L5 IVDD post surgery

SO!! The PT team told me lola stood up by herself on Thursday!! They said it was very awkward and crossed legs and once she was up she needed help, but I’m so so happy she did that!! We will get the urinary cath removed July 11, and then she can start hydrotherapy :) Small victories! She did well we...

Re: Labrador L5 IVDD post surgery

Question re: physical therapy. We are 6.5 weeks post op now, she’s able to bear weight unassisted for up to a minute without wobbly, no walking (I’m happy with the progress). Range of motion exercises...she continues to refuse to allow them. Will not bend her back legs. Gets very distressed and pull...

Re: Labrador L5 IVDD post surgery

The first time was my fault, I started to take her outside and I didn’t detach the cath and it pulled out :( bulb was inflated. She didn’t whine tho. The second time (2 weeks later) I noticed her whining on the camera, came home early from work and the cath was out and deflated. She always has an Ec...

Re: Labrador L5 IVDD post surgery

Hi carol! I’m most concerned with the fact that she cannot poop unless I literally manually extract it from her. She will whine for hours if she has to poo and I’m not home (I work 13 hours 3 days a week and I watch her via camera). I’ve tried all the bowel expression tricks and she either eventuall...
