Re: Mystery paralysis

Thank you Lisa. I don't have to tell you how devestated we are. To wake up this morning to find no little dog to greet me. Walking out to the barn and not seeing his little self running into the woods. My life revolved around my dogs, though I have a cat and rabbit and parrot, it was truly the dogs ...

Re: Mystery paralysis

We actually imaged by x ray for tumors of the thymus and megaoesophagus three weeks ago and day before yesterday. E had our vet come to the farm and we let Robin go. He was having trouble swallowing and breathing in spite of the prednisone. She said we should have seen some small improvement not sym...

Re: Mystery paralysis

We are pretty certain we will have to let Robin go by the weekend. He has been paralyzed now for 5 weeks. It has been frightening and exhausting for him. The Dr told me the prednisone would cause further muscle wasting. Is there is any muscle left to waste? He is a sad shadow of his former lively ha...

Re: Mystery paralysis

So there was no response to the MG drug. Dr wants us to give another two doses just to be sure. If nothing seen by tomorrow he sent us home with prednisone. He said we wouldn't see improvement right away, perhaps by friday or even next week. He didn't sound hopeful. He says we're out of options now....

Re: Mystery paralysis

Well, Nan and I haven't seen any change or improvement. The Dr suggested that we might if it were MG. I'm headed back to OVC at noon for the Dr to re-ealuate. Perhaps there would be an improvement that we can't see yet? Nan and I have nearly given up. Robin has lost the brightness in his eyes and he...

Re: Mystery paralysis

Thanks for responding. Some of the weaknesses we put down to age, or perhaps, missing his " brother" my dog, who passed away in July 19. 1. He couldn't jump up onto chairs or bed in the last year or so. We put it down to eye sight? He would rock back and forth facing the chair but couldn't...

Re: Mystery paralysis

Our newish neurologist at OVC was very informative and thorough. He understands where we are and how we want to move forward with some kind of treatment. He did an assessment to compare to the intitial one. Unfortunately Robin has deteriorated in that he is losing nerve function to his voice/bark an...

Re: Mystery paralysis

We're here now and I'm afraid I'm being pushy. But we need to be clear going forward.

Re: Mystery paralysis

What an amzing story. 12 hours from now Robin will be getting his recheck and 2nd assessment. Keep a kind thought for us. In my heart I think he can come back but no one knows what will happen next. You folks have helped me get this far. I'm committed to helping him but my sister has to be on board ...

Re: Mystery paralysis

Sorry, I just read your links re the exam. I dont think I ever mentioned that Robin has seizures, or did have. He is on phenobarbital and hasnt had a seizure for over a year. They started 8 years ago while we were on vacation and were so few, maybe once every month or 6 weeks we didnt medicate until...

Re: Mystery paralysis

Thanks Carol. Everything everyone has said has been incredibly helpful. I keep thinking that they missed something in his neck too. Robin is sort of my sisters dog. Sadly we had a falling out last night over his illness. We are both very stressed, obviously. She wants to euthanize him. He does look ...

Re: Mystery paralysis

We did consider ticks. Their effect begins to abate when they are removed. I tried ice with Robin and syringing. I think we wre managing with wet food. We ha e an appointment Tuesday atOVC, to see if we cant get any drugs(steroids) The neurologist said they will reassess him and it may take an hour?...

Re: Mystery paralysis

Yes, Coonhound Paralysis checked every box and was the final possible diagnosis after Ontario Veterinary College tests showed no spinal trauma or tumors. We are at 4.5 weeks and this disease apparently is out of the dog's system by this time. Typically 3.5-4 weeks to see some sign of improvement. Ro...

Re: Mystery paralysis

Thanks. Sorry I forgot to add that we had him to the vet at 130am on wednesday/thursday of this week. I felt he was very dehydrated from not drinking. We discussed UTI and after a thorough exam the vet felt it wasn't that. We did a urinalysis and sure enough it was negative. We've been monitoring hi...
