Re: Please help new to this Skipper my dog is lame both back legs

That's great about the pool. It does them so much good. Every little bit of kicking the hind legs while swimming or taking ANY kind of steps with the hind legs while walking around in the water is rehab. Does not matter if they are short steps, steps out of sync with the front legs, steps where one ...

Re: Labrador L5 IVDD post surgery

I'm curious what happened when she pulled her catheter out those two times. Do you know how long it was out? Was her bed dry when you came home? Did she void a lot when you had to carry her out to the car to have it replaced? I don't suppose there's any way to be sure with the catheter in, but she h...

Re: Labrador L5 IVDD post surgery

Hey there, Yeah, I don't know the answer for sure either. I know I would feel encouraged because she does have deep pain sensation in both hind feet. That means the signals are getting through, and that's what you want to see. I did not realize you were in the medical field, that is great! So on a d...

Re: Ideas for Fidgety Dog During Diaper Changing/Expressing??

If you can kneel on the floor with her facing backward between your legs like in the photo, and kind of put your toes together to block the exit, you might be able to work with her and there's no place for her to go? 300px-Photo6s.jpg There was a man here who invented a stand similar to what you des...

Re: Please help new to this Skipper my dog is lame both back legs

Well, took Skipper to the Vet says Kennel cough, don't get it, he hasn't been any where except the Vet and he had kennel cough when I first adopted him from the humane society and it was not the same, sure he had a cough, but different cough and he peed as normal and didn't lick his ding dong like h...

Re: Labrador L5 IVDD post surgery

I tried to find a schedule for tapering and I don't see one. I'm afraid I only see general guidance. Is this something where you could say to your vet, "It might seem unnecessary to taper, but it won't hurt anything to do so, right? So in that case, how would you do it if you were going to? Because ...

Re: Labrador L5 IVDD post surgery

That was a good question that I don't remember anyone asking before. I am not a vet but I looked it up and do find several sources recommending tapering gabapentin for dogs. I will post screenshots and links below. I should also mention I found what appears to be a highly credentialled source where ...

Re: Please help new to this Skipper my dog is lame both back legs

Well, he's done his strict rest for 8 weeks and thank goodness the pain is gone. If you want to continue rest longer, it's a judgment call. 8 weeks is what they say, and you guys were strict, so you did what was recommended. The disk should hopefully be healed. Healing of the nerves that were affect...

Re: Difficulty Expressing Bladder

It all sounds very encouraging. Waiting to hear what they say about how empty she is when you do the express check at PT. I'm thinking she may feel pleased with herself if she can do it all by herself with stimulation to get started, and that kind of matters, too.

Re: Difficulty Expressing Bladder

Hi SamanthaRescueDogs! :banner: Yes, what you are doing is called external stimulation. The part where she actually squatted was new to me, though. :) You can see some videos demonstrating external stimulation in a dog and several cats at the end of this article. https://handicappedpet.net/helppets/...

Re: Paralyzed dog with FCE

OK. Frustrating only partly covers it. Well, good thing you caught it. Thanks for explaining what it turned out to be, I appreciate the information. I'm very glad you know exactly what the bug is, and have the medication for that exact type of infection. The expressing medication might be worth a tr...

Re: Please help new to this Skipper my dog is lame both back legs

As far as I know, yellow is usually good. Yellower than usual could mean more concentrated, not drinking as much. Not sure why his drinking varies so much. Maybe the temperature? They say you can encourage the dog to drink more by giving chicken broth, or freezing chicken broth into ice cubes and ad...
