Re: Pip diagnosis

They're very similar except for color. Pip is black with tan markings. Here is his pic from his Petfinder listing, when he was still tetraplegic. Pip - Petfinder.jpg Do you see how curled up he was? It took weeks of exercises just to get him to be able to lie on his side with his spine straight like...

Re: Onset Paralysis

Just another thought. I was thinking of 2 different exercises worth trying. Using a Slope Have you tried walking him down a downward slope? My dog's physical therapist called it incline therapy. She could move all 4 legs in the underwater treadmill, and had been doing that for several months, but ju...

Re: Newbie but need support

I am thinking about getting him started on some sort of joint supplement. Does anyone have a recommendation for little dogs? Preferably something OTC before I call the vet's office? I know they will have a recommendation but it won't be OTC. Bobbie was a chemistry professor at UC and she runs the c...

Re: Onset Paralysis

Hello Friends & Happy Holidays! Hi! I have been thinking about you and wondering how you were doing. I am not a vet or a rehab therapist, but I'm speaking here from my own experience and from the heart. I have been offline for a while to say the least. We have been so busy but I would like to u...

Re: Newbie but need support

Oh, that's hysterical! Tinker took the big bed, so Colonel is trying to fit in the small one. What a handsome dog he is, and your tree is beautiful. He's dreaming of a New Big Bed being under it, embroidered with His Name! :xmastree: All joking aside, it just occurred to me, can Tinker curl up...

Re: Pip diagnosis

He did something cool today. We were doing the morning Wall Treats exercise, and on his first treat, he took 2 or 3 steps, then his front legs went out ahead and his hind legs remained behind so his hind legs were stretched. I thought, "Oh, no, did he lose track of keeping his hind legs going?&...

Re: Pip diagnosis

Pip is still knuckling on his front feet, but he is aware of it and is fixing them. This is more progress. Strangely, and perhaps embarrassingly to say, I have had him for 4 months and just this week I am figuring out his signals when he wants to go Number Two. We figured out Number One right away. ...

Re: Newbie but need support

She said, "mom he went straight to under y'alls bed and just stayed right there. He didn't move." I told her the goal was to rest him in his pen so he wouldn't move around so much. She told me he was scratching, biting, and jumping to get out, but once she let him out, he moved under the ...

Re: 3-Year Old Malshi Diagnosed with Stage V IVDD

I absolutely agree with the acupuncturist. I think strict crate rest is the way to go, and hydrotherapy later. If it was my dog I would want crate rest plus an anti-inflammatory such as prednisone. Then hydrotherapy later. I was very surprised by what your neurologist said...

Re: 3-Year Old Malshi Diagnosed with Stage V IVDD

Thank you all for the replies and glimpse of hope. We took Mickey to the neurologist yesterday and she did not identify any deep pain in Mickey, but still said it was very early on. She suggested we start water therapy with him, as well as gave us a couple of other tactics to start his physical the...

Re: Newbie but need support

I wish I had a magic answer on the crating. Do you think he would like chew toys? Would he like his crate in a different location, such as by that window where he could see out? Some dogs will just whine and cry. He's more like, "I'm not going to cry about being stuck in here, I'm go...

Re: Newbie but need support

Oh the best laid plans! DS came down with the flu yesterday. DD was getting ready to come home from college for Thanksgiving break and came down with the stomach bug. Needless to say I've been a bit distracted today with nursing everyone once DD was able to drive home. Yikes! I'm sorry to h...

Re: Newbie but need support

Haven't updated because things with Tink continue to improve. The bathroom confinement when we are out continues to work, not well, but it is what it is. He chewed the door frame yesterday in an attempt to get out. He's absolutely fine in his playpen when we get home. Oh dear for your door frame. B...

Re: 3-Year Old Malshi Diagnosed with Stage V IVDD

My wife and I were on a cruise last week, and while we were away we received the sad news that our 3-year old Maltese Shih Tzu (Mickey) became paralyzed from the waist down. We took him to a neurologist last Saturday and the MRI revealed he is not a candidate for surgery. Apparently, our pup's disc...

Re: IVDD-Pinched Nerve-Paralysis

:welcome: Hey everyone, I'm here for any kind of help or support I can get. In the span of 36 hours Abby went from perfectly normal to being without feeling in her lower body. I immediately took her to the vet after she showed signs of something wrong and the vet says she has a pinched nerve in her ...
