Re: Spinal stroke, no deep pain, back two legs

My Poohbear took a lot longer to recover from her FCE. It was several months before she quit dragging her paw and could pick up her foot and place it correctly. It wasn't a problem in the house where it's carpeted. But when she went outside for walks she HAD to wear a boot or a sock. She resisted an...

Re: Can you prevent IVDD?

I read the following with interest: The Doctor specifically said that Glucosamine supplements do nothing for IVDD, nor do any other supplements. Supplements or drugs that work on soft tissue or on joint membranes have nothing that will do anything for degenerating bone in discs. I know that we all w...

Re: Can you prevent IVDD?

Thank-you for the advice. While my dog of choice is the Labrador Retriever - my Grand dog (Dachshund) has been raised with the Labs since a pup. I really do believe she thinks she's a Lab. Like the Labs - she will over eat if given the chance and being only 10 lbs - just a few treats add up f...

Can you prevent IVDD?

My daughter has a Dachshund. She is around 2 now and doing great (the Dachshund - not my daughter  ). I know this forum deals mostly with what to do after IVDD. Are there any things that you can do to prevent IVDD? I've read that Dachshunds should not do steps or any jumping. Pick them up with...

Re: New FCE help

I attached some pictures of my Poohbear. The first is before her FCE. The second is after the FCE with the sling I made for her. The last one is of Poohbear after she recovered. I check on the BB from time to time because I remember how difficult it was to get through. I want others to know - there ...

Re: New FCE help

Poohbear is no longer with us. She got bone cancer three years after her FCE. She was 7 when she had her FCE and we had three wonderful years with her after that - thanks to this website and Karen & Bully. The "expensive - specialist" at Ames State Vet teaching hospital recommend...

Re: 2nd FCE ?

It was very depressing for me - lots of tears shed  - when I'd think of of the things Poohbear couldn't do after her FCE. Like running in the woods on long hikes and she loved to fetch her kong (that's what she was doing when she had her FCE). Things changed so drastically after her FCE.:( But ...

Re: New FCE help

Maybe you could ask your Vet if there is a physical therapist in the area? I would say even one visit might be enough to learn what exercises you could do to keep his range of motion in the affected leg until the feeling comes back. Sounds like he is doing well. As small as he is - you could do wate...

Great info - thanks for posting the link.:D
They would be great for Senior dogs who have trouble getting their footing on slick floors.

Re: 2nd FCE ?

I think every dog is different. But my Poohbear took a looong time compared to most before she recovered as much as she could. Sometimes I would not noticed ANY progress for 2 weeks and then there would be a small bit. I kept a journal - so I could see she HAD made progress. It was 4 months before s...

Re: 2nd FCE ?

I'm so sorry to hear that Jack had a second FCE. :( But it sounds like the Vet thinks he has a good chance of recovery. :) Poohbear only saw her PT twice a week in the beginning. Is there hydro therapy available in your area? That is what Poohbear responded to best. But every dog is different. If he...

Re: 2nd FCE ?

I've never heard of a second FCE? :? Especially so soon after the first. Although the Vet did tell me after Poohbear was recovered (as much as possible) not to let her twist or lunge after her kong or try to do steps on her own as she could injure her back. Almost makes me think it's some kind of ot...

Re: Question for owners of FCE dogs

Our Poohbear took a long time compared to many to recover from her FCE. It was about 4-5 months before she could walk & had recovered as much as she was ever going to. It was very small steps. Sometimes there was no improvement for over a week. First feeling came back in one leg - then the other...
