Re: need advice for a newfoundland with no front leg

I have a 6 year old yellow Lab with a foreleg amputation. His limb was removed at the first joint in the leg (near the shoulder) so he has a small stump. He has had no problem adapting to the amputation and still swims, runs, jumps, etc. We are actually going to send him out duck hunting with a good...

Re: Amputating front leg--scapula or no scapula?

Yogi, our 6 year old lab, still has his scapula and humerus he has done fine. It does seem to help with his balance, and didn't cause any issues with healing after the surgery. He is now officially 1 year post amputation (as of 9/19) and is doing awesome! I have a video of him playing frisbee with m...

Re: Considering Amputation

I have a lab who is a front leg amputee - tonight we played soccer for 45 minutes, took a 15 minute rest, and then walked 10 blocks. We do it pretty much every night and he plays a half an hour of frisbee with my husband each morning. He does have a weird bobbing sort of a gait, but it really doesn'...

Re: Sasha

Prayers and love coming over to you and Sasha.... Not sure if it is the same with animals, but I know that when my grandmother was dying and could not communicate with us (she had a stroke) she held on until each one of us told her in our own ways that we were going to be ok and we knew that she lov...

Re: Considering Amputation

Welcome Jessie! I know that your mind is probably racing right now with a million question and possibilities, so the best advice I can give you is to remember to breathe! Also, try not to beat yourself up about not getting your pup medical attention right away...it sounds like you did everything rig...

Stop the itching

Hi everyone, I have been away from the board for a while and am just catching up on everyone's stories. As some of you know, I have a 6 year old Lab named Yogi who is a front leg amputee. We have been super busy trying to keep up with him this summer! We have had innumerable frisbee games and great ...

Re: Need Advice! Making the decison to amputate.

Hi Jamie, My husband and I have an 80 pound lab (not over-weight - just had HUGE parents!) who is a front leg amputee. He does the carpeted stairs at my mother-in-laws at break neck speeds, both up and down. If the stairs are not carpeted though, he can be a little hesitant. With a little bit of coa...

Re: newborn 3 legged chihuahua needs help

I would imagine that being born with three legs, he will likely be able to get around just fine. For most of us, our pups had to re-learn how to walk after an amputation and have all done fine after the initial shock. I know from personal experience that it took me longer to get used to my dog's mis...

Just an idea

Is there a way that you could add a cloth or soft mesh panel to the area where the missing limb is? You should be able to sew a piece into the harness itself and it might keep it from shifting. I was going to try this idea with my front amputee, but he just lays down when we are in the car, so I hav...

Pictures of our Furry Friends!

Hi All!

Just thought I'd start a thread where we could post some pictures of our three-legged (or two-legged) friends!

These are two new photos of my lab Yogi - he is 5 months post operation...

Welcome to our little group! I know that the thought of amputation is terrifying - especially when you are dealing with a pup, but you will find nothing but support and great stories here. We have become a family on this board and you can almost always find someone who is dealing with or has gone th...

Great story cleo - welcome to our family! I agree with Tessa - Joey needs a blog! What great adventures he has had! I can definitely relate to a tripod lab - my Yogi used to be a duck hunter until he tried to catch a car and lost. He does great as a three-legger but still goes a little nuts when he ...

Willing to Transport!

Hi all,

Just wanted to offer my services as a transport in the state of Wisconsin. I'm very centrally located and would be more than willing to do my part!

Thanks,

Another bit of advice

Hi, I have a 3 legged Lab (a front amputee) who we adopted only 2 weeks after his surgery. One thing we did learn is that, while little Gizmo should adapt fairly well, be prepared for him to trip or take a few "diggers" along the way. The best think to do if this happens is to very subtly ...
