Re: Golden w/ possible DM
After losing our Mia last week, we got a Golden Retriever puppy. Part of the reason was seeing Angelo's pictures on this site. He is so beautiful. I have Angelo in my thoughts.

We had to euthanize Mia this morning.
Mia was gasping for air this morning and her tongue turned bluish purple. We took her to vet. He believed her problem with C1 was causing this and there was nothing to do for her. We are so sad, but we did not want her to suffer. Thanks to everyone for the support you have given. We have peace in kn...

Re: Confused about neurological test for feeling or pain
I just read Busters story, all 8 pages. What a sweety. I know several people with boxers and they all say "best dog I ever had". So you really never knew exactly- what the injury was, a fracture, a disc? Before Mia went down, her left paws were worse than her right. X-rays did show her pro...

Re: Confused about neurological test for feeling or pain
Caroline,
Can you give me some details of your dog as far as if he or she had surgery. Is your dog able to walk now? I would assume since it is all 4 that it was a cervical disc? Thanks.

Re: Confused about neurological test for feeling or pain
She was able to lay in an upright position and eat and drink until 5 days ago. She hasn't been able to upright herself for 5 days now. We try to lay her upright but she falls to the side. We can use pillows, but she seems uncomfortable because she still feels in her back legs and we can't seem to po...

Re: Confused about neurological test for feeling or pain
Friend2Dogs, I probably wouldn't consider euthanasia for Mia if it were only her back legs. She looks like she is so sad. Are all the dogs like this when they first lose use of their legs? I know if it were her back legs only she would adapt and we would get her a cart. But it is so much harder with...

Re: Jack Russell Terrier cervical problem and paralysis
I noticed Mia stretch her front legs out tonight when she woke up from sleeping. Does this mean anything? Also, I just found out from husband that when he came home last night after being gone for a few hours, that she had moved 2 or 3 feet off her towel somehow. He said she had peed on the towel. S...

In what way do Candy's feet react when they are squeezed? Does she have deep pain perception?

Re: Confused about neurological test for feeling or pain
Neither vet has used hemostats on my dog, just pinching between the toes. No vocalization from the dog, maybe an anxious look. I will have to ask the vet next time we taker her for acupuncture if she has deep pain. I saw forceps and hemostats on the counter, but he didn't use them. Like I said in ot...

Re: Jack Russell Terrier cervical problem and paralysis
Mia's small improvement was short lived. Only about a day. It was probably from the shot of cortisone. I changed to a closer veterinary accupuncturist. Actually, someone I work with, her mother took her rear paralyzed dachsund to him. The dog did walk again after treatment. He was more optimistic. H...

Confused about neurological test for feeling or pain
If a dog is paralyzed in its legs and the vet squeezes its paws, what are the possible reactions and what do they mean? I know with a human, there can be reflexes that cause the movement, but it doesn't mean they are feeling anything? If a dog pulls the paw away aggressively, bending at the joint, c...

Re: Jack Russell Terrier cervical problem and paralysis
What was the problem with your dog? What caused the paralysis? Was there improvement through the year before he began to walk again? What treatments were used?

Re: Jack Russell Terrier cervical problem and paralysis
We noticed some improvements as early as last night. They were minor but still something. She was able to eat and drink without us holding the bowls for her. And we also noticed when she went from laying on her side to laying up right, she corrected her back legs to bend under her how dogs normally ...

Re: Unknown problem
It could be a cervical disc. My dog had no pain either and hers started with just one front leg. Hers was found on xray, but her 1st and 2nd vertebrae were actually "moved". Hers is a severe case. She is 10 and vet feels it is degenerative. If your dog wears a collar, take it off, don't le...

Re: Jack Russell Terrier cervical problem and paralysis
Not good news for us. We went to the vet. He said with the fast deterioration she has shown since he saw her last, he gave us only 20% chance with acupuncture. We opted to try it. He did 4 needles in her neck area with electric probes attached to them. And also gave her another cortisone shot and sw...
