Re: Urinary: still has an infection
Beth, Tinker got his first UTI a few weeks back (he's 6 months post-surgery for IVDD) and the culture turned up a nasty bug- a pseudomonas- and the treatment of choice was Baytril. Baytril is pretty heavy-duty stuff, like Cipro. He was on it for 3 weeks then off it for 2 days then re-cultured- and i...

Elaine, there is always hope!
Just look at Buddy and how far he's come along! When I look at Tinker with his spastic, funky walk- it looks beautiful to me. He is mobile, happy, and pain-free- everything else is gravy. Everyone reading this who's been down this road with their pet will agree- though of course there are some days ...

Re: Urinary: pee and poop *LINK*
We have similar questions. Tinker just hit 6 months post-surgery. He actually does a unique combo of regular and spinal walking. He has normal bowel function but so far can only empty his bladder about 3/4 of the way on his own and we express the rest. In speaking w/his neurologist 2 wks ago, she re...

Jean- So glad to hear that Jaime is happy and doing well! Your dedication and Jaime's progress are inspiring to all of us. Like you, I feel like I've learned volumes not only about caring for a pet with a physical problem but about life choices and the value of making decisions that feel right, rega...

Re: Dogs: Spastic Beagle
Hi, Ouida. I'm the owner of 2 rescues, a beagle/JRT mix (also from BREW) with IVDD and a beagle from a different rescue. From your description, I'm a little unclear as to your beagle's symptoms and I don't think I have enough info to tell if it seems more physical or behavioral- or a combination of ...

Already using acupuncture
Thanks Anita, but we are already doing weekly acupuncture - have been doing it for 3 months (since 1 month post surgery). I think Valium is prescribed as an off-label use to relax the urinary sphincter- I'm just not wild about using it and I'm not convinced it would help. BTW, how is Sydney doing? I...

Urinary: Regaining Bladder Emptying Ability
Tinker is 4-1/2 months post disk surgery. He can empty his bladder himself about 1/2 way, and we express the rest. He's never had a UTI (knock wood) and we usually walk and/or express him every 3-4 hours. He is not incontinent- he does have an awareness of when he has to go and rarely has accidents....

Re: Other: Sammie's acupuncture
Maureen, I don't know where you are located, but that frankly sounds a little bit high. We go for weekly acupuncture. My experience has been that there was a higher initial evaluation fee for the first visit. Since then, the office visit fee has been waived and I only pay for the acupuncture. You ma...

Re: Links: Sammie's Page!
Maureen- You're preaching to the choir ;)...Beagles are sweet and funny. It's wonderful how she's fit right in with your family and pets- like it was meant to be. And it sounds like you are doing very well with establishing a routine with her and her care. Regarding food- if she's taking things from...

Re: Links: Sammie's Page!
I defy anyone to look at your pictures on Sammie's page and not break into a big grin. Maureen, what a wonderful person you are and what an uplifting, happy story. Too many people involved in rescue just don't "get it". They have good intentions but are unwilling to go the extra distance f...

Re: Dogs: Beagle Looking for a new loving home.
Jaime, Chan looks and sounds like a wonderful dog. It is a shame you will be needing to leave him behind after 4-1/2 years of "loving him like your own child". Each time a dog is re-homed, he is the one to suffer the adjustment problems. And, as a special needs dog, he will be more difficu...

It WAS lightweight fluff
Dianne was right- what a waste. What a shame to bury such an important topic in an hour of fluff. I'm very disappointed.

News: Dateline NBC segment on Rehab
On Dateline NBC tonight, the show's theme is "Pet Nation". They'll be covering a variety of pet related topics including rehab. Should be interesting. Set your VCRs.
