Please Crosspost!! ( If you can help please contact Kim directly at kimspeaksforanimals@gmail.com ) "Winston was left paralyzed after his owner "stepped" on him in the middle of the night. They could not afford the emergency vet after they took him there and then took him to a local v...

Re: Helpful tip

I believe that it was my blog that you read that mentioned using a crib or playpen for a dog post-surgery for IVDD. http://tinkerbeagle.blogspot.com/ When our dog suffered a ruptured disk and then had surgery, we happened to have an old porta-crib on hand, and it worked like a charm for the first ph...

Re: Dachshund incontinent and parlysis in hind legs affter disc

JMaxine, It sounds like Lexi might benefit from some meds to decrease the sphincter resistance and bladder tone so that you can express her more easily. My dog Tinker went through disk surgery 4 years ago and we had him on a commonly prescribed drug, Bethanechol for about a month after surgery, whic...

RESCUED!! - 2 BLIND BEAGLES - WAYCROSS, GA HIGH-KILL SHELTER

5/28 UPDATE: This story is on its way to a happy ending... Both dogs have been pulled from the shelter and vetted. The male's eyes were extremely infected but have been successfully treated. The female had one eye removed, and is HW positive.... and will be treated for that shortly. They are on the...

Re: Mysti new abdominal sickness

Mysti's Mom- Based on what you're describing, the first thing that occurs to me is to have your vet rule out Pyometra. At first glance, most people (and some vets) think the risk of Pyometra is eliminated when the ovaries and uterus are removed during spaying. But, there is a specific form of it cal...

Re: ACL Tear on dog that needs Expressing

Thanks for the responses. Looks like I need to give more background (Sorry, I forget that I don't post often enough that you guys would remember his situation.) History/recap: Tinker ruptured a disk and had surgery in Feb. '05. After surgery, he was unable to stand or walk. After 6 wks. of crate res...

ACL Tear on dog that needs Expressing

We just found ourselves in a tough situation! Tinker, who had successful IVDD/disk surgery 3-1/2 years ago, may have an ACL tear. He woke up in the middle of the night with a rear leg in spasm (retracted to his body) and stumbling around. He was able to settle down to sleep, and by this morning the ...

Re: People's reactions

This is an interesting topic. 3 years ago, following his disk injury, surgery, and crate rest, Tinker was in a cart for 6 months before he regained the ability to walk. It was during the warm weather months, so we had him outdoors and in public quite a bit.... to the park, street fairs, etc. Thankfu...

Bailey does have a UTI, the vet said it was probably caused by the Prednsione. I woke up thinking about this, not sure. http://www.marvistavet.com/html/prednisone.html Here is information on Prednisone. It seems strange that it would cause a UTI, I've never heard that before, maybe someone else has...

A neuro vet is the ideal choice for back surgery since neuro cases are 100% of what he/she sees. HOWEVER, a general surgeon who has years of experience with cases including back surgery could also perform this surgery on your dog. When my dog had disk surgery 3 years ago, it was one month "too ...

Jasmine's Mom- Ironically, my Beagle/JRT mix, Tinker, had surgery for a ruptured disk 3 years ago today. At the time, he was just turning 5, so he was young like your dog. We are one of the fortunate ones who have had a positive outcome. Maybe retelling our story can help you now... From the time of...

Smokey: How is Abbey?

Smokey, I think it's been about 2-1/2 weeks since Abbey's disk surgery, and I was wondering how she is doing and how you are coming along with her care. I'm assuming that the catheter has been removed by now. Have you gotten the hang of expressing her bladder? Have you had a follow-up visit with her...

Smokey, With disk surgery every outcome is different- it ranges from walking normally out of surgery to slowly regaining the ability to walk over the course of months (or years!) to having mobility only with cart assistance. But by having surgery quickly you have just put Abbey on the path of having...

Re: Dogs: Good News To Share about Oscar (LONG)

Congratulations, Cindi.

What a wonderful example for people facing IVDD for the first time- never say never! Regardless of how bleak things can look, with determination and luck, sometimes good things happen anyway. Fingers crossed for continued progress with Oscar. :)
