Data on incontinence prognosis (know of any others?)
Has anyone found data on recovery rates? I found reference to one study from 1985 on how long it takes to know if cats are likely to recover urinary continence (Smeak DD, Olmstead ML. Fracture/luxations of the sacrococcygeal area in the cat: a retrospective study of 51cases. Vet Surg 1985; 14:319–24...

Re: Cat with paralyzed tail- help please
If it's not bothering her and you're able to keep up with cleaning it, then keep it. If she seems to be annoyed or bothered by her tail, then have it taken off. My boy's useless tail was obviously bothering him; it threw him off balance when he jumped, and upon landing he'd turn and lick/chew/bite a...

Re: Cat: broken pelvis+tail, eating+pee+poo problems, I'm sc
I have no real idea how it happened, or why, but I was never so glad to see a mess in my life - my guess is that he was asleep, and the bladder relaxed - is this possible? This happened with Bully often. I'd squeeze as much out of him as my muscles could manage, knowing that some had escaped me, an...

He is climbing trees quite happily, and has no problem making the initial leap onto the trunk, then climbing right to the very top. We can't help worrying and standing under the tree 'just in case', but he is very agile; it is clear he is using his tail for balance. However, he still has issues jum...

Re: Possible bowel incontinence after dislocated tail
Some of his future might depend on whether his pelvis got broken. If the opening through which the solids must pass gets narrowed, then that would make it more difficult for stool to move out of him. Has the vet mentioned anything about that? My cat was lucky - no damage to the pelvis itself. Some v...

Re: cat diet for solid poops AND no gas?
My housemate handles expressing the bowels; I'm terrible at it. Perhaps I can solicit a description. Prelude to the status update: I think I made a mistake in giving him benebac right before changing his diet. He was very, very messy for several days. Status update on Bully's BB Wilderness diet.... ...

Re: cat diet for solid poops AND no gas?
He's just been given his second dose of benebac. I found Blue Buffalo Wilderness at PetSmart on Monday. Hopefully in a few weeks I'll have a status report.

Re: Cat with no use of hind legs
I can offer a little advice on expressing bladders. We get more out more easily when we express Bully when he's fresh from a nap; sometimes we even pick him up while he's sleeping to do it. Relaxed muscles make it a lot easier. By the time he's restless and active, it's a big struggle. With Bully, i...

Re: cat diet for solid poops AND no gas?
He doesn't think that pumpkin is food. Yogurt has been tried only sporadically. Does anyone know an effective way to use yogurt (or acidophillus)? Should it be given for days? weeks? months? daily forever? I'm inclined to try bene-bac first, since it seems to be designed for the purpose. If somethin...

Re: cat diet for solid poops AND no gas?
Is bene-bac considered a probiotic? The PetSmart near me does carry Blue Buffalo brand, but not the Wilderness variety. I can check with the nearby vets to see who carries Hill's. Would i/d or c/d be better? He's never had a urinary tract problem (knock on wood), but has fecal tract problems out the...

Re: SOS-Cat: Amputated tail + bowel & bladder incontinence
Here are some Candian brand names for it:
Acilac
Apo-Lactulose®
Laxilose
PMS-Lactulose
You might find it easier in a drug store than a pet store, since it's a human medication. Hopefully it doesn't require a prescription in Canada. Good luck!

Re: SOS-Cat: Amputated tail + bowel & bladder incontinence
I just get it from my vet. I think that, with a prescription, it can also be bought from pharmacies and from online pet supply stores like drsfostersmith.com. A 16 oz bottle costs about $11 and lasted almost a year for Bully, so it's very cheap.

cat diet for solid poops AND no gas?
For the first year or so after the accident, Bully's poops were firm and dropped out on their own and were comparatively easy to deal with. For the last year and a half, though, it's been the consistency of toothpaste on good days and liquid on bad days, so we've had to learn how to express his bowe...

Re: SOS-Cat: Amputated tail + bowel & bladder incontinence
I know how maddening the diarrhea is, and you have ALL my sympathies! Just want to make sure that you notice that Laxatone and Lactulose are different things. Laxatone is a mineral-oil-based lubricant and is helpful for short-term constipation. Lactulose is a sugar-based stool softener that can be u...
