Re: New mom of 3 legged poodle: questions

Thanks, Donna, I think you are right about the stairs. She was in a ranch house before and may have only gone up and down a couple. We have a large 3 story house and she is a little insecure so follows me everywhere. I've noticed she's getting more confident on the stairs by the minute. We'll try sh...

New mom of 3 legged poodle: questions

Hi, I am the proud new mom of a 15 month old 3 legged standard poodle. Cassidy lost her right hind leg at birth when her mother accidentally chewed on it. I had a couple of questions. We usually go on 45 minute to one hour hikes with our 5 year old standard poodle. Will Cassie be able to do longer h...

Re: Not sure what happened to my little man.

Hi, I just posted about my standard poodle who passed away suddenly last Saturday. I was struck by your description of what happened to your little guy. You mentioned anemia, and I think my dog died of IMHA. You might want to do some research because poodles are susceptible and my Phoenix had a simi...

Phoenix is gone

Last Saturday, Phoenix, my wonderful standard poodle, collapsed and died. He had not been sick, in fact, with the spring weather he had improved a great deal. He was able to walk (stagger) a little around the house and was really enjoying playing ball in his Eddie's wheels cart. On Tuesday he had be...

Phoenix is worse- need advise

Hi, everybody, Phoenix's legs are getting worse. He now drags his right back leg and I am wondering if someone could remind me of the suggestions of how to reinforce the toes of his booties which are getting ripped. He does have stirrups but prefers to move his back legs and resists using the stirru...

Does jumping cause IVDD?

My 13 year old standard poodle, Phoenix, who has Type 2 IVDD. used to jump a lot as a younger dog. He could leap a 4 foot fence with ease and catch a ball high in the air. I am wondering about this because I have a 5 year old standard who also likes to jump high when we play ball. Should I limit his...

Re: 11 year old 109 lb lab with FCE/ spinal stroke

I have a large standard poodle (70 pounds) who can't walk by himself anymore. He has an Eddie's Cart wheelchair which is fantastic. We use the bottom's up leash for quick bathroom trips but for longer outings, the wheels are great. It takes less than a minute to get him in or out. A towel or sling u...

Re: New member-standard poodle with IVDD and inverted eyelid

Phoenix's tummy is all better, and he is really enjoying playing in the snow. He likes to drop his ball in a snow bank and dig with his front paws till he sends it flying behind him. Then comes the tricky part because he's not so good at backing up. Eventually he figures out how to turn himself arou...

Re: paralyzed shih-tzu - Sammie

Hi, I use a bottom's up leash for my standard poodle. I was using a towel and then I got a belly sling. That's great for lifting him to his feet or helping him into the car, but it doesn't work for going to the bathroom. The bottom's up leash seems to stimulate his bowel so that he goes more regular...

Re: New member-standard poodle with IVDD and inverted eyelid

Thanks everyone for the thoughts and suggestions. Phoenix is feeling much better a few hours after I started him back on the prednisone. He is on the prescription diet food which usually gets his bowels back on track. He is not in any pain, which is a big relief. He just doesn't feel his back legs m...

Re: New member-standard poodle with IVDD and inverted eyelid

Hi, I am sorry to hear about Blue. I am sure you knew that the time was right. Phoenix is not doing so well right now as he had a bad bout of diarrhea and the vet told us to stop his prednisone. Now his back legs are much worse. He is knuckling constantly and even with the bottom's up leash he can't...

New member-standard poodle with IVDD and inverted eyelid.

Hi, I just joined the discussion group and wanted to introduce my standard poodle, Phoenix. Phoenix is nearly 13 and has had shaky back legs for about a year. He started knuckling and falling over a couple of months ago and the vet diagnosed disc disease but did not recommend surgery because it is T...

Re: Need advice on wheelchair training

Hi, I hope Jake is starting to enjoy his wheels. I have a 12 year old standard poodle with disc disease and partial paralysis of his rear legs. We got an Eddies Wheels cart last week and one thing that helped Phoenix start to enjoy himself was playing ball. At first he was too timid to go after a ba...

Re: 11 yr old lab w/limited rear leg mobility

Hi, I have a 12 year old standard poodle with disc disease. He has been shaky in his back legs for over a year, but now can barely walk. The vet does not recommend surgery, so I got him an Eddies Wheels cart. He absolutely loves it because he can play ball and go for walks again. I think it is havin...
