Managing with a paralysed dog after my surgery
this is Marilyn again, I wrote sometime back and asked about caring for wally after my surgery. I want to tell you what I did in hopes it will help someone else. I have a sofa bed and I opened it up and Wally and I slept there for 2 weeks. I put a vinyl table cloth under the sheet and pee pads on top of the sheets. wally just loved sleeping in bed with me instead of his coop.wally had breakfast and supper in bed for two weeks. and all I had to do was to change the pee pads, I also kept him in the wraps, so it kept the laundry down. I was so worried about how I was going to care for him. thank you for your many suggestions,I really appreciated them. I wish I could have borrowed a crib as I think that would have worked well too.thanks to all of you. this is such a great support group...

reply to connie &cricket about caring for paralyzed dash
thank you for your nice reply, wally and I are doing well I had my stitches out yesterday and now I am able to pick up wally and put him in his crate at night. I thought he was going to wine after sleeping with me for two weeks on my pulled out sofa bed, but he didn't he did very well. this morning when I was taking him out of his coup he dragged himself half way out as if to say I'll help you Mommy.Yes even though our little babies can't walk they bring us sooo much love. Myi friends thought I was crazy to take care of wally and my disabled husband after my surgery but as the saying goes where there is a will ther is a way. thank you for your support. Marilyn...

cold hind legs
Hi it isMarilyn again, my dog wally has cold hind legs when he is in his wheelchair, I guess it is due to not using them and poor circulation. I was wondering if this is common. Is it bad for him to be in his wheelchair for any length of time? I usually only keep him in there for an hour at a time. I hope someone can give me some feed back on this. thanks Marily...

carts
I also purchased my dog's cart from the same company, and at first IO had a hard time putting him into it. Wally also did not like it, so I put his leach on and took him for a walk around he house for a couple of weeks, now he follows me around the house by himself on the cart. I know it is frustrating but don't give up. Marilyn...

Dogs flab
I am Wally's mom and I recently noticed the skin on his body is very flabby. When I pinch it there is a lot of it. I hoope you understand what I am trying to say. Wally is a doxie he weighs 14 lbs, he has been down a year. Could this be something to do with his muscles or could he be over weight? I have only recently noticed this. He doesn't have control of his urine but he barks after hes poops. He stands and tries to walk once in a great while. I love him dearly he is the light of my life. Any ideas will be much appreciated. Re: mini daschund newly paralyzed Help
Hi Mandy I have a dashound that is paralyzed, he has been this way for over a year. He is also incontinent, I can't tell you how many of my friends and sadly even vet. that tol me to put my dog down. My dog ios not sick he is paralyzed. I know how you feel at first it all seams so over whelming believe me and the othrs on this board it all falls into place. Wally is still the same loveable dog he was before this happened to him, and he is happy. Take a deep breath and let your dog tell you what he wants believe me he will. at this point crate rest is the best.Take care you have a lot of supportive people on this board. Wally's Mom Marily...

Re: Animal Planet's E-Vet Intern Episode
I am replying to the post about the show Animal Planet. I have a doxie that I was told to put down by two vets. What is wrong with these vets? The dog is not sick he/she is only unable to walk, they are still so loveable and protective. Yes they are a lot of work but they are so worth it. I wouldn't change my dog for a dog that is able to walk for anything. My husband is disabled I wonder if these vets think I should put him to sleep too. marilyn...

I am Wally's MoM and he is incontinent, and he has sores on his belly from urine (i think) does anyone have any ideas what I caqn put on him? I was told by someone that Desitin was good. I read the ingredients on the package and it said it contained zinc and I remember reading that zinc isn't good for dogs. Wally also has tiny bumps on his head near his ears that are very itchy.I would appreciate any suggestions? ps.Wally is a daschund. Thanks, Marilyn...
