walking

Hi Cathy My doxie Wally had no deep pain sensation, and no surgery and he didn't walk for over 18 months and now he walks on a leash. He had no blader or bowel control untill 2 days ago he started telling me when he wanted to go out and make poops. I am so thrilled, although he still doesn't have bladder control. Hang in there each dog has his own time table, and it is worth the wait. Marilyn and Wall...

walking

Dear Marilynd It seams as though you are at a good start. Wally had no deep pain sensation and I was told by 2 vets to put him down, and to be honest with you I almost did. The vet told me he would not be happy as he would not be able to run after birds and sqiurells. then I thought Wallyi isn't realliy an outside dog, he is happy in the house playing with his squeeky toys and cuddling up with me. I did take him out for walks on the leash and he was happy being outside with me. Needless to say I went to another vet and told her I was commited to do anything I could to help him, if he ended up walking that would be fantastic but if he couldn't that would be ok I would love him just the same.(I als have a disabled husband and work 4hours a day) The vet put him on steriods and pain meds(she told me she didn't expect him to walk) I couldn't afford surgery and the vet wasn't sure if it would help. I gave him 8 weeks of crate rest and I had to express him, he could poop on his own but didn't realize he was doing it. Wally still does not have bladder or poop control. I massaged Wally's legs all the time and i did the bicyicle and I stimulated his feet. I gave him lots of attention and affection I cried in another room. I always tried to be up beat around him. I told him I loved him no matter wat he could do or not do. I would never let him drag himself aroun. I would keep in on the couch when I was with him or he would layi in his basket.I did get him some wheels and he used them when I was home. He would follow me all around the house. I even put him on the deck with his wheels. He couldn't walk or wag his tail for 18 months and then little by little he was able to push his legs against my hands, and he constantly slowlyimproved. Now he walks like a drunken sailer but he walks on his leash and wags his tail. He plays fetch and tug of war. Wally is not allowed to jump on anything or down on anything when he does drag I pick him up and put him in his basket. I love him so much and have never regretted keeping him.Yes I do have a lot of laundry to do but it is for my baby and I don't mind. After awhile it just becomes routine. I hope this has helped you but you certainly on the right road. Marilyn...

back trouble

Dear Connie, I am so sorry to have read that you are having trouble with your back,as you know you have really been over doing it. I can sympathise with you, as I have problems too. I had an epidermal and it helped some and I use a heating pad and also a back brace, especially when I pick up Wally. I hope these ideas help you. Give cricket a hug from me and Wally. Re: handicapped dachshund

Yes I am crate resting her throughout the day, since I've been back to work. Her first week back from the hospital, I took a vacation week to be with her and monitor. She isnt in any pain, so I thought Id forgoe the acupuncture option thinking that most people here are using that as a pain recovery method. Thanks for your reply Don't give up hope,my daschund (Wally) began walking after two years without surgery. When he couldn't walk he was still happy to be here with his Mom. Marily...

Re: LONG OVERDUE UPDATE ON TOMMY!

Thanks for the welcome back guys! I will keep you updated on Tommy and get some more pics up ...now I know how to do it! Keep up the good work with Tommy. Wally couldn't walk for over two years, now he spinal walks. Three vets wanted me to put him down, thank God I didn,t listen to them. I have a disabled husband and a disabled dog, and I have back issues and leg problems Wally has no control over his urine or poops, so yes I express especially with his poops. Wally uses a wrap. I wouldn,t trade my Wally for the world, he is so loveable he loves to cuddle on the couch with his MOM and I love it.He is still Wally, just as Tommy is still Tommy. Thanks for the update on Tommy.
