Re: Help Needed: Negative Attitude
<Unfortunately, we had to go to our vets today, and he managed to upset me with his very negative attitude, which over the past few weeks we have noticed seems to be the norm.> Steroids may be to blame for his attitude. My dog has also been paralyzed about 6 weeks (has not made the dramatic recovery...

Re: Urinary: PPA Experiment Results
I started and stopped PPA twice in the last few weeks, both with the same results. The PPA toned up his bladder so much that I had difficulty expressing urine. His bladder was firm to the touch, and would not release urine readily. However, when I lifted him out of his crate (actually an open topped...

Re: Wow! What great News!
James and Kimberly, What GREAT news about Shadow. You have been wonderful to take such good care of your pup! I'm sure Shadow will thank you with lots of pup kisses. There is a special bond that develops when you help a pet in recovery. Perhaps you will be able to help someone else with a disabled p...

Re: Congratulations on the progress!
Bernadette,
We're all so happy when a pet shows improvement or signs of recovery. It's wonderful that you are seeing such progress!
Best wishes for continued good health for both of you.

Re: Help Needed: Care for a loving paralyzed pet
I agree with Critters that crate rest is VERY important. It appears that Shadow is already showing positive signs of healing, e.g. sensation returning to his feet. That is very rapid compared to the progress most of us experience with our pets. I am also limited financially in the amount of money av...

Re: Help Needed: Care for a loving paralyzed pet
Dear James and Kimberly, I can hear the frustration in your letter about Shadow. Let me tell you that you have come to the right board for support. There are many more learned people than I who read this board who can direct you to different websites with help. Perhaps they will read your plea later...

Re: Glad you found this board!
Kerry, You are among friends at this board. We're all dealing with pet health issues of one kind or another. My dog became paralyzed almost 6 weeks ago. He doesn't really care that he is parallyzed and leads a happy life in his current state. I can see small progress each week, but am uncertain when...

Re: PorK?
Tom, My dogs also like boiled chicken, rice, cooked and raw carrots, green beans (NO SALT), but I understand that pork can lead to pancreatitis. One of my dogs developed pancreatitis about 3 years ago when I let him lick some turkey gravy from a dog food dish. Pancreatitis is expensive and nasty to ...

Re: Links: Daschund with disc problems *LINK*
My doxie is about 6 years old and became paralyzed with a slipped disc about 5 weeks ago. He is paralyzed in his rear legs and incontinent. If your pup is not urinating you will need to express his urine manually NOW. Don't wait until the morning to do it. I've attached the link previously posted by...

Re: Urinary: PPA for dribble
Mary, I'm Schnitzel's Mom, who is trying PPA for his dribble. I am NOT a vet, but would strongly encourage you to get a urine test done if you have seen some blood in his urine. Schnitzel did not have evidence of blood when the dribble began. He leaked, sometimes prolifically at times, and at other ...

Re: Help Needed: Dashund with disc out! *LINK*
I've read about Purdue's work with PEG. Apparently it is most successful when used within the first 72 hours following the disc event in conjunction with surgery. Isn't it interesting that ingested, it would be poisonous, but injected, a near cousin of antifreeze is beneficial? I've attached the Dec...

Re: Urinary: Help! PPA-Phenylpropanolamine HCL
Michael,
Thank you for your response and endorsement. I read about PPA online and was not confident about the drug or its benefits.
I really appreciate you taking the time to read and respond.

Urinary: Help! PPA-Phenylpropanolamine HCL
I need advice about PPA. My doxie was paralyzed about 5 weeks from a slipped disc, and is incontinent. I express his urine. About a week ago he began having some urinary leakage. Although I realize this could be a good sign, several readers thought that it could also indicate a bladder infection. Th...

Re: Help Needed: Dashund with disc out!
Oh Barb, I'm so sorry to hear about your pup's paralysis, but you have come to the right place. There are many of us working with paralyzed pets at different stages of rehabilitation. My doxie had a slipped disc about 5 weeks ago and is at home in recovery. Home is the happiest place for recovery. H...
