Re: elderly dog with increasing motor problem

Start with providing a better surface- put rugs down so she can get her footing. Even with a wheelchair she'd need better surfaces to walk on. One way to help decide if a wheelchair would help is to make a sling by putting a couple of holes in a towel or scarf and using it to support her back end as...

Re: pressure sores from carts and dog nappies

If she isn't in the cart long that's probably not causing the sores but fake sheepskin seat belt covers make good cart seat padding. Make sure the diaper isn't too tight and isn't left on too long, and use a barrier cream to prevent sores. There is a good quality of life scale at Scout's House ( htt...

Re: Dog not walking 4 weeks after IVDD surgery

Four weeks is still very early. I wouldn't be worrying too much yet. What does his therapist think? My own opinion (and I'm not a professional) is that he should be using a cart, taking slow walks where it is safe to have his feet uncovered (grassy paths, sand) so that he is encouraged as on a tread...

Very cool. Really takes advantage of the ability to change quickly from one strut to another. I wish we could test them but we don't have any snow (and don't often get it- (It's Juneuary here.)

Re: boxer has DM

There are some DM support groups on Yahoo groups and on Facebook- you'd probably find them very helpful.

But I agree- a wheelchair (cart) will help greatly with quality of life as well as basic needs.

Re: Pet Stair Lifts...

I think if you didn't have the door at the bottom of the steps you could put the ramp there permanently, and hide the motor inside it. No need for much of a hole that way. Very clever design!

Re: Rear Supportive Sling or Wheelchair?

i'd get a cart right away. If there is going to be improvement, the cart may help. If not, you might as well get her used to it. However, some people think the crate rest period should be as long as 12 weeks (maybe even more?!) so you may get other opinions. Walking with the front legs will stimulat...

Re: anyone had success ramp up set of stairs large dog

The Ruffwear Doubleback harness is great- meant for lifting search and rescue dogs- but I think 80 lbs is a lot to lift. But you might be able to make it work with a carpeted ramp and assist with a harness.

Re: Wal-Mart $4 meds

Also check local drug stores if they have a similar deal. Our local store here has Keppra (generic) on the $4 prescription list which cost me 1/3 what it did at Costco Online pharmacy (which is often cheaper than anywhere else). It's not on any of the chain pharmacy lists- which worries me as the st...

Re: anyone had success ramp up set of stairs large dog

Nine stairs probably means a five foot rise? How much room do you have for a ramp? It isn't very hard to make a ramp to place over half the staircase but if it is too steep it won't help her get up- stairs might actually be easier. You need to be able to make the slope more gentle.

Re: Frequent uti & paralysis

It seems to be more common in females than in males, and in some females more than others. They probably get infected from their own stool since it is so close to the urinary tract in females. It may help to clean her well after each time she poops. How long does she stay on an antibiotic for a UTI?...

Re: Popeye

I'm confused- is he having fewer seizures now? If so, I'd finish the drug and see if they continue to get fewer. If not, I think I'd want to get started with an antiseizure drug, but research them first, something may be safer for cats. A lot of vets are not familiar with all the new options (and as...

Re: Heart Disease and now IVDD..surgery or wheels?

Usually the pain goes away after awhile and she won't mind the cart once she gets used to it. Mine haven't, they get the idea it means going out and having fun.
