Re: Addendum: Something to research for back pain management
I originally read about devil's claw for use in humans, but there are a lot of herbals that benefit both human and non-human animals in similar ways, and I've seen the liquid form in preps for cats as well as dogs, although that's no guarantee of safety. Just look at some of the crap that passes for...

Re: Cats: Litter Box
Maybe use a different litter. She might not like the way regular litter feels anymore = just a guess. Try shredded newspaper, or just plain newspaper; she may now prefer a smooth surface.
If you're using heavily perfumed litter, maybe it's the smell that's turning her off now.

Re: Addendum: Something to research for back pain management
Did you use it on horses for pain management? I know ivermectin is used for both horses and dogs -- tick repellant in horses and heartworm preventive in dogs. The dosage is different, obviously. The sites I've checked out that sell it for dogs don't also have information on devil's claw itself so I ...

Addendum: Something to research for back pain management
I used "devils claw herb for dogs" in my search browser and came up with several mail-order sources for it in liquid form for dogs. I still haven't found any information as to toxicity (or potential for such) in dogs, however. But it's a start. Devil's Claw is a desert plant; I can't remem...

Re: Something to research for back pain management
Several years ago in one of my Herbalgram journals was a little article about an herb called Devil's Claw being used for pain management in humans with low back pain or post-operative low back pain. There was some encouragement as to its use. It might be worthwhile to research its use in dogs, since...

Re: Yeah, I had a stupid vet or twelve
I'm sorry to hear of your terrible experiences. Yours are extreme, and sadly you aren't alone. Where mental illness is concerned (which I assume is what your son suffered from), the number of people who commit suicide while ostensibly under a doctor's care (or some other professional's) is astoundin...

Re: "stupid" vet?
I agree with both of you; however, not being knowledgeable in the arena of special needs is not tantamount to being 'stupid'. Thickheaded, stubborn, cold, clueless, yes those terms are accurate, but 'stupid' is not. I wouldn't get on the soapbox about it except that ... if the vet is 'stupid', then ...

Re: "stupid" vet?
I would never call a veterinarian "stupid" unless I had good reason to know that the vet was actually incompetent. A vet can be impersonal and maybe act like s/he should be in another line of work (like drilling for oil somewhere in the Sahara or blowing up mountains), but that doesn't mak...

Re: visualization technique
Heather, I often come across women who claim that they try to do monthly breast self exam but they're just not sure they're doing it right or what they're feeling for. I always tell them to start out either in the shower and do the exam while soaped up, or afterward or before bed with a dollop of lo...

Re: Plain ol' juice
Carol, plain blueberry juice is just as effective for urinary tract health as cranberry juice. I hope (because I don't KNOW) blueberries are okay for cats; if so, a health food store will sell plain juice, and if you are near a Trader Joe's, they also sell plain cranberry as well as plain blueberry ...

Re: He is eating and drinking well so not much pain -- CRITT
People who have fibromyalgia have good appetites, too. You don't have to be in constant, never-ending pain to say "I'm in pain a lot". So I wouldn't use the appetite as a guage of pain. My reasoning about the shock having already worn off is that Steve, normally a faithful cat who isn't la...

Re: Cats: Broken back leg - what to do
I apologize if I offended you, but this world is full of people who ignore a pet's injuries for a multitude of reasons -- not enough money, don't care enough as it's "only an animal", ignorance, etc. Your first act when you noticed Steve dragging his leg should not have been to ask around ...

Re: Dogs: Robby - Paralysed Pup
I'm sorry -- I didn't realize that Robby is paralyzed in the hind end. Okay, so the wrist is probably unstable from the extra pressure... if there is a way to do so, check to see if there's a tendon tear or something like that. It sounds like splinting is the best choice to help stabilize that joint...

Re: Help Needed: Severed spinal cord, need urgent advice pls
Deficits are always distal to the injury, never proximal, that is the general rule of thumb in spinal cord injury. The spinal cord branches into major nerve pairs at each vertebral level. There are little canals and holes in the spinous processes that these nerve pairs go through, and then they bran...
