Re: Feeling helpless with too many UTIs

Do you express her when you take her out of the bath? It could be bacteria is getting in through the water and expressing right away helps prevent that.

Re: 2 year old Frenchie- question

My own opinion is that at this point, you go to a wheelchair so that she'll be using her legs. Some people will say to keep resting them but in fact the research on the subject shows that length of crate rest is not a factor in recovery or not. I don't mean get a wheelchair and just let her run- you...

Re: Needing Hope & Help for our Dachshund

Quality of life with a cart can be excellent. I had one corgi in a cart for 9 1/2 years. You do need to watch out for UTIs and if she's already had one, keeping her on an antibiotic until you get the urinary issues resolved (peeing or being expressed) is a good idea. In early years of paraplegia UTI...

I can't see anything obviously out of adjustment. It could be the saddle just not fitting right. Have you tried padding it? Can you comfortably put a finger between her leg and the saddle or is it squeezing fairly tight?

Re: Support for owners

Mine uses a belly band (male diaper) but he doesn't leak constantly- but I have to ask if you have tried expressing? If your dog is filling up with urine and is not expressed he'll leak, but if he can be expressed it is possible (though not certain) that he wouldn't leak as much. For coming off when...

Here's an article on carts you might show your vet. http://www.cliniciansbrief.com/article/canine-wheelchair-equivalents?utm_medium=facebook&utm_source=Social_Share&utm_campaign=CB_Article_Social_Share_Bottom The muscles will waste, especially if there are no reflexes, but as long as you man...

Re: Better cart for Inca

Wasting legs should not mean she is going to die. I had a corgi who had a cart for 9 1/2 years. He died of unrelated causes. He did have a little trouble with pressure sores due to eventually having no natural padding on his back end but padding the cart and limiting stretches of time in it took car...

Re: Support for owners

There is a Caretaker's forum. But... I'm surprised that you are having such a hard time. What are you doing to manage his incontinence? Does he wear belly bands? Does he just drag around the house? How about a drag bag? Where does he stay when you are out? Does he just leak all the time or seem to p...

Re: Ciprofloxican for UTI

Did you tell the vet what you calculated? Maybe the vet came up with a once a day dose and then forgot to divide it? I would do as you are- don't go over the recommended max dose. You might ask why the vet recommends twice the normal max dose. (Maybe there IS a reason but it has side effects and I d...

Spinal cord damage won't always show up on X-ray but it sounds like what he has. If it is a disk rupture odds are not good for walking again- that's what's called Type III traumatic disk rupture. But he could so very well in a cart. I'd keep him quiet and nurse him for awhile and see if any improvem...

Re: Expressing a large atonic bladder

Have you checked to make sure none of those drugs can cause urinary problems? Metacam can. Sometimes these aren't known to cause urinary retention but might. (Previcox did in my paraplegic dog so that I could not express him).

Re: Dog Sitter

Short answer- you might not be able to. But it depends on what you need. If you can find a good dogsitter you may be able to train that person for your dog's special needs. They get additional skills and you get someone at a lower rate (next time they can charge more!) Or maybe see if you can find a...

Re: Adopting Dog with Incontinence Issue

You'll probably be able to figure out a schedule as long as he eats the same thing at the same time each day. (And play around with food to get one with firm stools so you don't have a mess). If he eats a lot of fiber at an odd time you'll have more problems (my paraplegic corgi loves apples so we c...

Re: elderly dog with increasing motor problem

You could do a four-wheel cart but with the cost of getting one where you are and the probably limited time she'd have to use it I'm not sure I would.
