Re: Big Dog Diapers
I have to say that I am not a fan of belly bands with elastic - I find that the fabric in the middle "pooches" out, pulling the diaper away from the body that results in pee leaking everywhere. When it comes to belly bands and female diapers I think that folks are often talking about dribb...

Re: Limiting Water intake???
I have to work during the day and there are times that I can't get home at lunch meaning Carl is on his own for 8 hours. With a diaper inside his belly band Carl will not leak any urine round the band. I once videoed my dogs to see what they got up to all day ... apart from a couple of minutes barki...

Re: Limiting Water intake???
Hi :) If your dog has had a sudden change in his urination the first thing I would do is have him checked for a urinary tract infection. Paralyzed dogs are at increased risk for UTI's because they can't empty their bladders fully - just be sure that if you take your dog to your vet that they do a ur...

Re: furkid with calcification of the spine causing neuropath
Hello Linda and welcome Being a Boxer, and reading her story (especially about the myelopathy signs) I wonder about degenerative myelopathy, have you had Tess tested? The test isn't definitive in that all it can tell you is if she is not affected, a carrier or at risk, but it would potentially give ...

Re: neela got hit by a car
Hello and welcome Did the vet take radiographs of the neela's spine and pelvis or just her legs? Has she had any blood work done? That she is still able to move her legs is good, that she can't stand may be due to a spinal cord injury (that may or may not show on X-ray), but also may be due to somet...

Re: Lucy was hit by a car.
Hi :confetti: I'm Joanne and I have 2, adopted, paralyzed dogs, Carl a 5 yr old Black Lab and Patroclus, a 7 month old mixed breed (I also happen to work in canine rehabilitation). the first thing I would do is to talk to your neurologist/surgeon and get their directions for Lucy's immediate post op...

Re: Hemivertebrae-Future?
HI Welcome, I'm Joanne and your post made me smile because I have shared my life with several "straight legged shepherds". Straight hindlimbs can be a result of several different at problems (trauma, congenital, infectious, genetic). They are basically caused by contractures of the quadric...

Re: Do you allow dragging?
Yes, both boys are incontinent. I just have the boys wear a belly band (which I make myself, costing less than a dollar each) with a diaper inside. I stimulate them to poop twice daily which prevents pooping in the house. Having said Tiny had surgery on his butt and is currently wearing a pullup in ...

Re: Do you allow dragging?
Hey I have 2 paralyzed dogs, Carl and Tiny and both pull themselves round in the house - Carl is a 70lb Lab and there is just no way his cart would fit in the house. I also wouldn't leave a dog in a cart unsupervised nor for longer for an hour or so (Carl's legs become swollen if he is in a cart for...

Re: Dog with spinal injury
Hi and welcome Thanks for taking this pup on. My recommendation would be for you to actually take this pup to a neurologist to get a specialist opinion as to if she is paralyzed and what her chances of recovery may be. I have 2 paralyzed dogs (Carl and Tiny) and bladder care is my number one priorit...

Re: Louise FCE
What day are you going to NC State? Wednesday I'll be seeing neurology with Patroclus, Carl's new brother. He's a 5 month old paralyzed puppy (hit by a car) from Romania who arrived on Friday and has already decided he is top dog! Carl is doing great, crazy as usual, getting ready for the NC State D...

Introducing Patroclus
For a while I had been looking for a black lab or Lab mix as a companion for Carl. In March I came across Achilles, a paralyzed dog in Romania. I applied to adopt him and all was set for him to fly to the USA when he became acutely sick and passed away the week before his flight. Knowing I was inter...

Re: Louise FCE
I would definitely have her checked out, given this is a new finding and she is an older gal. it may be that this is related to her FCE but may be a new problem unrelated to her neurologic problem.
Wishing you and Louise the best

Re: FCE in all four limbs
Hi Wendy I work in canine rehabilitation and I have rehabbed several dogs that were tetraparetic following a vascular accident. Recovery varies, but I had one dog who went from being able to move only his head, to running out the door a couple of months later. The big thing that I will say is do not...
