Re: Three legged cat needing emergency amputation
Please don't give up on her. She can have a happy life too with you and her brother Tripod as a double amputee. I have two cats with paralyzed back legs who are incontinent and I very well could have had the back legs amputated but chose not to. They do fine pulling themselves around and Harley is v...

Re: HELP! Cancerous Tumor
Karen: I would think a specialist consult would run about $100. I can tell that chemo is not inexpensive. My cat Junipurr, who is FeLV +, was diagnosed with a mediastinal tumor, essentially, a tumor wrapped around her heart, in June 2008. She had a six month protocol where she was in the vets gettin...

Re: HELP! Cancerous Tumor
Karen: You definitely should have seen results from the clavamox by now if it was an infection. Anaerobic bacteria is one that does not need air. There are broad spectrum and narrow spectrum antibiotics to which bacteria are sensitive to. It has been over 10 years since my class on bacteria so I can...

Re: HELP! Cancerous Tumor
Karen: I am really sorry you are going through this again. A couple thoughts if this is an infection then it should go down with antibiotics (like clavamox). I know Mia also had a lump that was pushing on her eye and it felt hard. When I took her to the vet she suggested scoping. A couple days befor...

Re: Newly blind cat--need advice
Pam: I would be concerned about other underlying causes. Blindness, specifically retinal detachment, is the presenting complaint for hypertension. At your cat's age, she should have her blood pressure checked. There is medication to control this specifically amloydipine or norvasc. I have not heard ...

Re: Young male dog hit by car and can't pee
I think Christine's advice to get another vet is right on and you've certainly have come to the right place for advice and I am glad you rescued this dog. I may have missed this but what kind of dog is he, I wasn't sure of the size. I have two cats that I express bladders on 3 times a day. I have ha...

Re: 5 year old aussie breathes heavy Help!
When I read your post my initial thought was that this is related to his heart. (Heartworms also like the pulmonary arteries.) You are obviously concerned and I wouldn't mess around with anything related to breathing or the heart and would get him in as soon as possible. Diana

Re: Young paralyzed cat
Like Critters said you need to learn to express your cat. Once you get the hang of it it is easy to do. You should do it 3 times a day to avoid urinary tract infections. I have 2 cats who are expressed 3 times a day---neither have had an infection. And you won't have to worry about your house smelli...

Re: Carl Update :-( Any spinal walkers out there??
My dog Jack spinal walks. He was born with partial paralysis of his hind legs. He basically dragged himself around when I got him at age 7 months and could not pull himself up the stoop in the back yard to get on the porch. He would usually urinate all over himself because he had trouble standing up...

Re: Megacolon in Cats
I have a cat whose spine healed at a 45 degree angle. She has paralysis of her hind legs although gets around quite well. She can pee on her own and was pooping on her own until last month when she got constipated and had to have a number of enemas under anesthesia. I understand that this sometimes ...

Re: anesthesia for a nine year old
Marilyn: I agree with Jane that there is always a risk with anesthesia. But I do think the risks are greater for Wally if he does not have regular dental cleanings as Jane pointed out. I have had cats who are seniors undergo anesthesia. One cat I adopted at age 18 years---she had a dental cleaning a...

Re: paralyzed kitten
Nanci: I have 3 with paralyzed back legs---none of them have carts and they all get along just fine without one. Simon is almost 8 years old and pulls himself along---he had severe congenital deformities and is also incontinent.(He also is a registered therapy animal for American Humane.) Harley, wh...

Re: Where does everyone express their incontinent animals?
I express my two incontinent cats with paralyzed back legs into the bathroom sink. Rinse with water and squirt with bleach after doing this. I put a towel on the basin and both sit on the towel while I express into the sink. With Harley who actually is quite good and purrs while I am doing this, I h...
