Re: Rowdy (aluminum hydroxide gel dosage?)

I finally got a call back from the vet. She said to go ahead and give 1 to 1-1/2 cc of aluminum hydroxide gel twice daily for the phosphorus problem. However, she said she does not think the phosphorus problem is the main cause of her leg problems. She suggested glucosamine for arthritis and is goin...

Re: Rowdy (aluminum hydroxide gel dosage?)

I posted the following message on the Yahoo feline phosphorus management group, but would appreciate any comments from anyone here as well. I just joined this group, just got some aluminum hydroxide gel, and am trying to figure out how much to give my cat and when and how. My regular vet is on vacat...

Re: Rowdy has weak hind legs due to CRF, what to do to help?

I got an email advising that the aluminum hydroxide that I ordered should arrive Friday afternoon. In the meanwhile, I have been trying to figure out what I can feed her and my other crf/anemia cat that is lower phosphorus that they will eat. Each morning and each evening, I try to coax them to eat ...

Re: Rowdy has weak hind legs due to CRF, what to do to help?

I have been rethinking my feeding plan. I intend to continue to keep both the Royal Canin Mature 27 dry cat food and Iam's Hairball formula dry cat food available. I keep the dishes arranged so that they come to the Royal Canin first. Some of them will eat that, but most, includig my two CRF cats, p...

Re: CRF Cat. Why do they need food to made their urine ALKAL

There is a Yahoo CRF group that has a lot of good advice: http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/Feline-CRF-Support/ The following site has a lot of good information: http://www.felinecrf.org/ Here are some lists of cat foods that compare the phosphorus, sodium, and protein levels, that are important to...

Re: Rowdy has weak hind legs due to CRF, what to do to help?

Aluminum hydroxide binds phosphorus and is recommended on the Yahoo CRF group as the most effective phosphorus binder. Magnesium, which sucralfate has, is bad because it can cause stones and urinary problems. Calcium citrate and calcium carbonate can result in too much calcium. The pharmacist at Wal...

Re: Rowdy has weak hind legs due to CRF, what to do to help?

I found out today that the reason I could not get through to the vet on the phone yesterday was because they were having an electrical problem that affected their phones. I called the vet this morning to ask if aluminum hydroxide would be appropriate for Rowdy, but she was too busy to return my call...

Re: Rowdy has weak hind legs due to CRF, what to do to help?

I did not give Rowdy any sucralfate last night or this morning and she did not vomit last night or this morning. She seems to be gradually eating more and walking slightly better. I can't tell if I am seeing the effects of no sucralfate or the effects of having been off of tapazole for a while now o...

Re: Rowdy has weak hind legs due to CRF, what to do to help?

I have been trying to watch for patterns and figure out what causes her to vomit and what causes her to walk better or worse. I have noticed that she usually vomits half an hour to an hour after I give her the sucralfate and it looks like the sucralfate that she is vomiting. She has been on the sucr...

Re: Am I a genius or WHAT!

I have bad knees and a bad back. I have tried knee pads for things like pulling weeds in the garden, but they were uncomfortable and tended not to stay in place. I got a big thick commercial-grade rectangular pad and found it is easier and more comfortable to kneel on that and move it from place to ...

You should be able to see the pictures in Caretaker's Cafe without logging in now. I will fix it on the other forums as time allows.

Re: Rowdy has weak hind legs due to CRF, what to do to help?

The addition of the acid to the amoxycillin in Clavamox causes it to kill a broader spectrum of bacteria and the pill form does not require refrigeration and for some of us pills are easier to give than liquid. However, the acid in Clavamox also makes it harder on the stomach than just plain amoxyci...

Re: Rowdy has weak hind legs due to CRF, what to do to help?

I read on the internet that it may take 6 to 8 weeks of being on sucralfate to completely heal an ulcer and that it should not be stopped prematurely once the bleeding has stopped, so I am keeping her on that for a while longer. Her stools are just gradually beginning to be slightly lighter in color...

Rowdy has weak hind legs due to CRF, what to do to help?

I currently have two cats with CRF and anemia (one non-regenerative and one highly regenerative). One of them, Rowdy, is having extreme weakness in her hind legs, that I am told is caused by the CRF, and I am wondering if there is anything else that I can do to help her with that problem. Rowdy is 2...

Re: Am I a genius or WHAT!

Cindi, Did you do it yourself or did you hire someone? Ripping out the carpet and replacing it with something that is easier to clean has been on my list of things to do for a while. I was planning to do it myself, one room at a time. I am trying to figure out what would be the easiest to install, e...
