Re: Obedience training a dog when dog is in a wheelchair

I should add- you can do Rally in competition in a number of venues, also obedience in a few. Competition can give you incentive to train, and it is fun, and a great way to showcase what a disabled dog can do.

Re: Obedience training a dog when dog is in a wheelchair

Well, mine were trained basically first, but I did train them for Rally trials in the carts. I used clicker training exclusively. You can google it and learn how, and it is great for dogs in wheelchairs as it doesn't involve any tugging or yanking. It's especially good for stays as you click to rewa...

Re: my corgi is able to lay down while he's in his wheelchai

My corgis have all laid down in their carts, but they also like to have a higher pillow to lie on sometimes. image.jpg As for how much time- I would give him a break from it every 2-3 hours or so, even if he doesn't mind being in it all day. That lets circulation get going again anywhere the cart fi...

Re: The vet wants to put my dog down

Do what you want to do. You have various options to protect her feet- Neurontin (gabapentin) often works, boots can be used, etc. Dogs that are paraplegic can live happy, healthy lives. My Candy was in a cart for more than nine years. He did not get UTIs. He only once got a pressure sore (due to nin...

Re: Hello! New & Dog Q's

In view of his size you may want to try a cart earlier rather than later- it would save you trying to lift, and the saddles are made to be more comfortable than a lift.

Re: Hello! New & Dog Q's

I had one dog that was completely paralyzed in the back legs and his kicked when his bladder was full or he had a sore somewhere. He had no control and you could grab a foot and he didn't notice. He had no reflex kicking (i.e., tickling his feet did not cause kicking.) Put him in the water and he di...

Re: Hello! New & Dog Q's

He could have ruptured a disk or had an FCE- neither will show on X-rays. Sometimes disk damage can be implied based on X-rays but it cannot be ruled out- that requires a CT with contrast or an MRI. The black urine I've never seen- I'd worry about bleeding somewhere causing that. I'd take a sample t...

Re: Help -Out of surgery - Loss of DPP

T12 is pretty low so getting bladder back is not impossible. Control of bowels takes more- a lot of older females lose that with no spinal cord damage. But you are right- wait and see. She can live a long, happy life in a cart if she gets nothing more back.

Re: Help -Out of surgery - Loss of DPP

Nobody can really tell you what the chance is of your particular dog recovering completely. I could give you statistics about surgery in general, but that doesn't really tell you anything. Having DPP going in to surgery is a better predictor than the 24 hr window. But losing it quickly after the inj...

Re: Ulcers In My Paralyzed Dog...WTH!

A couple of options- one, can he use a cart in the house? Does he fit into any kind of drag bag? Some dogs wear knitted or crocheted leggings. Or something like a kilt- a skirt, open at the bottom, that will drag along with him? One thing when my Oliver had sores on the tops of his feet from draggin...

Re: 8 year old pug with back problem

L-S means lumbrosacral disease also called cauda equina. Generally it does not improve without surgery so surgery was probably a good idea, but it doesn't always help. That's about all I know- but if you google those two things you might find more. You probably should consider a cart for him so he c...

Re: Adjustment to loss of movement in rear legs

If he is incontinent use a belly band with a pad to keep indoor mess down.

I think Dodgers list had a pattern for a drag bag. Not sure where, though.

Re: Gas problems

Splitting up meals is a good idea. Maybe try a med like Tagamet to reduce acid or GasX (ask the vet about that one as I don't know if dogs can take it.) Sometimes a piece of bread helps settle an empty stomach, too.

Re: Degenerative Mylopathy, Stopped Eating

Agreed- rapid onset is not DM as there is no such thing as rapid-onset DM. Sounds like a disk injury, or possibly spinal tumor, or any number of other things- but not DM. Some of the possibilities are treatable- it may be worth a consult with a neurologist or at the minimum blood work to see if it c...
