Re: recovery pain amputation

Hi Theresa, I don't remember how long was my dog, Milo, in pain, but it did take him a while to get used to walking without his front leg. For the 1st 1 week I carried his water and food bowls to him, and he had very small walks. There is a remarkable improvement right after the doctors take out the...

Re: three-legged dog club

here's something I thought Milo will never do again and he has not done for 7 months... today he actually jumped on the bed to demand breakfast. I've been saying that Milo is able to almost everything just slower than other dogs, except from jumping on the bed... well not anymore. My dog can do EVER...

Re: Thor

I used to think my 65lbs labrador was the only who thought of himself as a chihuahua... I actually do call him "chihuahueño". He wants to sit on my lap even when I'm at the desk... impossible to type! and it's now harder for him to keep his balance... here's an old picture: http://miloshko...

Re: Just adopted Abby

Hello and welcome to the board! My dog lost his leg due to a car accident, the same as Abby, last July. I think one very important thing to take care of is her weight. My dog is a labrador who loves food, so it's been a challenge to reduce his weight and keeping it that way. As far as exercise goes,...

Re: Leg amputation planned for Monday

Hi Calli, I'm sorry to hear about Polo. My dog was hit by a car about 6 months ago and he is doing great now! He can walk, run, swim. He does it slower, but nevertheless he does it. He can walk one mile to the dog park, play there, and then walk back. He is very tired afterwards, but so is my husban...

Re: three-legged dog club

thanks for asking... Milo is very spoiled. When he is just with me (my husband is the one working), he has no discipline, and basically does whatever he wants. Every day, during every walk, I have to pull him at the end of the block to turn around the corner because he wants to go straight towards t...

Re: three-legged dog club

I'm glad to hear Xena had an exciting day. She has gone through a lot in order to have days like yesterday, she deserves more of them.

Re: three-legged dog club

Hi Tessa, I'm glad to hear that things are going back to normal. I think Xena is clever and I would let her decided about the walks... taking it slowly, of course. If it were Milo, though, I would not say the same thing. Ever since the amputation, I feel sorry for him so I let him do whatever he wan...

Re: We had our phonecall -his leg's gone

I think that the worst part for me, waiting for Milo to come home, was that I did not know what to expect from the surgery and the recovery. If you still don't know what's he going to look like, here are a few links: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amputation and from my dog as well http://miloshko.blo...

Re: We had our phonecall -his leg's gone

Hi Adelaide At some point we, three-legged dog mums, had the same questions and concerns regarding our babies. I want to reassure you that your boy will be OK (as far as the amputation goes). The worst days will be the first 4-5 days and you'll see a major improvement after the staples come off. It ...

Re: Harnesses for Three Legged Dogs

Hi Adelaide, If your dog keeps pulling you while you walk, you can use a gentle leader. Since it goes on his "mouth", the missing leg won't be an issue. I don't use it on my dog for his daily walks, but when he goes somewhere exciting (beach, new parks, etc) he is able to pull even with hi...

Re: new member with a new 3 legged dog

Hi Julie, I'm not going to talk to you about training your dog not to pull, because, who am I to talk when my dog is not well-trained and pulls me a lot?, so I'll tell you about another option. I use the "gentle leader" on him. My dog, Milo, is a front leg amputee and can still pull me eve...
