Support for rear amputee

Post by sharonkinsey »

Hello all,

My special Bailey just celebrated his 4 week ampiversary and seems to be getting along well. He is a therapy dog and I am hoping to get him back to his friends at the nursing home. I worry about the stress on his other 3 legs especially the rear one as he had a TPLO on that leg many years ago. Should I use a brace or wrap or something like that to help give him some extra support on that remaining hind leg? He is such a happy boy - great attitude. We are waiting for second opinion from Colorado State Univ. pathology as to type of sarcoma - NC State diagnosed it as undifferentiated so we have not yet started chemo. I have him on a number of supplements however and changed his food to low carb. He is also getting acupuncture.

I also have a second dog diagnosed with osteosarcoma - he is one of my livestock guardian dogs and it is his front knee - he cannot have amputation due to problems with his rear legs. He is on palliative radiation and lots of supplements.

If any of you are interested in how it is possible to pay for 2 dogs in cancer treatment - check out my recent blog on pet insurance (I am not a salesperson - just someone grateful to avoid bankruptcy) - it has made all the difference in the world to us.

Sharon
