Not necessarily. Yes, we do watch her weight, but that said, we do not use senior diets here. We actually have done the reverse and put her on a high protein diet to preserve muscle mass.
It has to do with less ability to move the hips, so they are more rigid as they stand which means their front legs bow a bit. Also, they naturally have degenerative joint disease to some extent the older they get, even if they do not show pain. So in my case, my Cane Corso (120 lbs) who is 12.5 stands, but has a hard time with her hips. She cannot bend her head down very well, for instance to get food off the ground, because her front legs are stiff since they are being used as support for her back end. When she does have to go down, her wrist ends up bending too much at an odd angle which puts stress on it.
