Canine Compulsive Disorder - sometimes misdiagnosed

Post by GabrielDeafBlindPupFamily »

as seizure or even in one homozygous case, brain tumor.
Possum suffers from severe CCD and I am heavily researching.
My animal hospital has several doctors on staff. Possum saw one a week ago, who felt behavioural modification was all that was needed. This Saturday, another vet said medical intervention is necessary, and as her colon is flooding, this may be but the tip of the iceberg.
Following are some very interesting reads on CCD, but the most important thing is not to let the issue, the behaviour, whatever it is, to get to this compulsive stage, as then the dog has no control over it.
And this is but a small part of it. Very interesting reads. Christy
and I felt that Possum's brain is 'mis-firing' and indeed seratonin
reuptake inhibitors are used successfully in treating neurotransmitter issues, which is sometimes the cause of CCD. Once the dog exhibits to the extent of CCD, it is imperative to start behaviour modification as well as medical assistance. Ideally, the dog never gets to the compulsive stage.

JAVMA blames selective breeding and inbreeding for CCD (with
treatment starting with amitryptelene and then chlomipramine) and
stress-related CCD:
