Injured stray

Post by GayleKnotts »

We picked up a stray dog which had been hit by a car. Both rear legs were broken in several places, dislocated hip and many contusions and abrasions. Our vet has fixed hip, put pins in both legs but 10 days later, he still won't even try to walk. But the main thing is -- he must have been abused. He is so afraid of my husband and I, but even more so afraid of him and all men. He won't eat in our presence and won't make eye contact except briefly. He will allow petting but doesn't seem to enjoy it much. He never wags his tail or acts glad to see us even when bringing him food. He did snap at us when we were trying to rescue him so we are cautious. How long can it take to win his trust? He's probably 1-2 years old. We have 5 other adopted strays that are in a fenced back yard but we are keeping this new one in the garage which is very inconvenient. Has anyone had similar experience?

Thank you and WELCOME
What a lucky day for this pup the day he found you. I have just finished socializing a terrified and totally wild dog, and have helped another with a shattered body to recover, so I look forward to e-talking to you down in the 'forums'.
WELCOME!
