Re: German Shepherd in Kearney, NE area has until Feb 15th

Post by Andrew and Togie-Boy »

I don't know if this pup is still around, but I too have a German Shepherd mix in a MUCH WORSE condition, that recovered basically fine (he couldn't pee on his own for at least 6 weeks to two months), he runs/walks/jumps/loves/lives just fine, but I was told at the vet's that he would never walk again, and maybe wouldn't pee on his own, and that I might as well just get him a cart. If someone else is reading this with a dog in a similar condition, I URGE YOU TO BE PATIENT, keep your dog confined so that it has very limited movement (mine stayed in the confines, outside in the carport, in a baby-gated area as big as maybe three of him -- for TWO MONTHS, and I had to squeeze his bladder every 8 hours), you will not regret it, my dog and I bonded significantly more during that time, and you can tell he's grateful, and I'm glad I followed the advice of giving him prednisone tablets and keeping him immobile, rather than giving up, and giving in, hard as it was at times to deal with the uncertainty and bladder squeezin's.

What a wonderfully inspirational "tail!" Thank you for sharing your story, it is so encouraging for others who are new in their journies to hear that there is, above all, HOPE!

Betsy pm'd me with this wonderful chapter to Ed's story:
Just got some great news this week that the German Shepherd Ed is going to be officially adopted by the foster mom he was placed with in Utah. She adored him from the start, but his food costs were a hurdle for a while, hence the delay, but it seems she's worked it out now. Laura of Healing Heart Sanctuary said she was going to throw him an adoption party soon and announce his new perfect name. I think that's adorable, and I'm so happy he has his furever home. Just thought you all would like to know.

Hi All,
At long last, I have heard back on Ed's new name! Per Laura, his new mom was watching him play and jump around one day and with his floating graceful motion (now that's he's sound :)) and long sweeping tail, it brought to mind for her the motion of a flying kite. And that's what she named him. So now she has Koby (her older dog) and Kite :D

I'm doing well, thanks. I'm glad I've been able to get some updates on him, too! It's nice to know he's with a great family. As to video, all the video I have is a couple of them on the You Tube page for the Healing Heart Sanctuary (http://www.youtube.com/user/HealingHeartAnimals). I do have a pic of Kite and Koby and his new mom though. Enjoy!

What a magnificent man Kite turned out to be huh? He never doubted for a minute. He had already picked his family out, it was up to the rest of you to get him there! He spoke to you, no, he hollered at the top of his lungs, and you heard him and you ran to save him. What a story. Rescuers get emotionally beat up all the time by the ones we can't save, so having Kite's story is right up there with Stanleys!

Betsey (cricketsmom) shared these latest pictures of Ed (now named Kite). Most of them are with his brother Kobe and a couple with a foster his mom is caring for. Here is the update from Linda, his new mom. " Kite has made a full recovery and he is magnificent. He has the gentlest nature and a fun personality, I adore him. I adopted my boy Kobe two years ago( when he was five) from a friend who passed away, I had known him from a puppy, he was an only dog and I often wondered if he would like a companion. When "Ed" came along it was obvious from the very first minute there was something very special between these two dogs." Thank you so much for the time and effort you took to care for "Ed" it is only because of you that I have the wonderful experience of spending my life with this remarkable soul. best wishes.... LG ((*_*))

This is one of those stories that can go on forever, getting happier and happier. Don't know how many I can post at a time, but here goes....

When the pictures above first arrived in April , I had to share them with Daniela of The Daily Tail. She just wrote me back telling me that she published a story. Thought you all might like to see it. If you have time to click on the other stories linked (two)...such nice memories and a video too.

Hey Everyone! I am able to keep contact with LG on Facebook, and Kite is still doing great out there in Utah. His family has grown! LG works with Laura at Healing Hearts and adopted another dog from there. She is currently fostering a puppy as well! The pictures are from the winter months, but I thought you would enjoy seeing them.

Also, there will be a story about Ed/Kite in the Pilot's N Paws book that will be released next month. I read an early version of the story last October to fact-check, and it reads like a newspaper article, but it's a nice account of the rescue. I have not read the finished product, as he said he would change a few things for accuracy. I just hope it makes us all proud! Here's a link to Amazon.com where it provides the release date and information about the book.

Wow...this story just gets better and better. Betsy, did you EVER think that your efforts to save this sweet dog would snowball into something this wonderful? :trophy: How does the vet you were working for feel about all this now - remember how reticent he was about the rescue efforts? Hopefully, Ed/Kite's story has opened his mind and heart to other possibilities. Can't wait until the book comes out!
