Brooklyn, NY: Amazing tri-pod cat needs place to heal

Post by Christine »

Wonderful story of people coming together to help a homeless cat in need. Bushwick sounds like a very special cat who deserves a great life. We all know that a missing limb is not a problem for a pet and Bushwick is already quite a cookie! (Notice I left out the word "tough"...just an adorable cookie of a character!)

Warning: Photo of Injury is graphic.

Severely Injured, DELIGHTFUL, Homeless Cat Now Safe and Recuperating from Leg Amputation after Horrific Injury
HOME NEEDED or FOSTER

A heartwarming video of Bushwick prior to surgery can be seen here: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10150535056649772

On December 16th 2011 a plea appeared on Craigslist to help an injured stray cat in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY. As rescuers rallied together formulating a game plan to rescue the cat and mobilizing, despite all efforts, nobody could find him. Several individuals visited the street where he was allegedly seen all weekend with no luck and we were beginning to think this could be a Craig’s List Hoax. Then Sunday evening the cat showed up on the doorstep of a neighbor who was kind enough to bring him inside while waiting for the rescuer to arrive. This was indeed NOT A HOAX…the photo of the sweet cat’s leg is graphic so be forewarned. His delightful, friendly disposition is miraculous as witnessed by his rescuers and recorded in the attached video of him before he was even treated for his massive injury.

This boy is one stoic angel…Bushwick was transported to an overnight foster and he was taken to the vet first thing Monday morning. The injury is at least a few weeks old - the bone was dead and infection had already set in. He had his leg removed today, Dec 20, 2011. He is otherwise healthy, felv neg, approx. 1 year young and now neutered as well.

*Bushwick* is currently in the care of the New York City Feral Cat Initiative. This incredible KITTY needs a fabulous foster home soon.

Bushwick made it through his amputation surgery yesterday with flying colors! He will be released from the hospital tomorrow or Friday and needs a foster home in which to recuperate. Can you offer up a quiet corner for this special boy?

Buswick, now known as Petey had his surgery. Here is the latest update. What a great group he has watching out for him!
I am not giving this a green check yet because he still needs a home, but I know he is safe and cared for until his new family is found. This group is only allowing someone in New York to adopt him and it sounds like there is a line waiting to do so. I just hope that his friend, Buddy is found too.
Application - Petey AKA Bushick.docHi, Thank you for contacting us about Petey (also known as Bushwick)
and for your patience with my reply!
The hospital listed him as Petey on his records so we are referring to
him as that, but he is also known as Bushwick in online posts
and residents on the block called him Henry. His adopter gets to
choose his forever name! We have specific requirements for fostering
and adopting, plus all applicants must fill out the appropriate form &
email it back to adoption@nycferalcat.org - please read below for all
the details. Your interest in him is GREATLY appreciated! Although I
can't respond to individual questions (or else I won't have the time
to work on new rescues which come in all day & night, 7 days a week) I
did want to update you on his latest status as you were one of the
very first people to email asking about him! Please see below for
more details, we will have a current photo up on our facebook page
shortly, see below for details. I did get a glimpse & he looks
comfortable & fine, like nothing happened to him! He is super
affectionate to the hospital staff and makes friends with everyone -
he is a really special cat! Everyone who is interested in fostering
or adopting him MUST fill out the appropriate attached application and
email it back to me at this email address. See below for specific
details on fostering requirements. We also need a foster and home for
his friend "Buddy" and several other 3-legged cats that were recently
rescued. Thank you to everyone who helped rescue Petey AKA Bushwick
and everyone working on trying to find a foster and permanent home for
him! You are lifesavers! Thanks also for all the postings,
cross-postings and mass emails about his needs. Your efforts are so
appreciated & helpful! See below for more updates on Petey & details
on his friend Buddy.

How old is Petey? He is almost a year old.

Is there a photo of Petey after surgery? Yes it will be posted soon on
our facebook page at our website http://www.facebook.com/nycferalcat

Is he neutered? Yes

Has he been tested for feline diseases? Yes, he tested NEGATIVE for
FIV & Feline Leukemia.

Is he vaccinated & dewormed? Yes

When did he have surgery? Petey had surgery on Tuesday & came through
with flying colors!

Where did he have surgery? At the wonderful Humane Society of New York.

Can he have visitors? No, Petey is not able to have visitors.

When will Petey be released from the hospital? It will be at least
several weeks before he is released.

Has his best friend "Buddy" been found yet? Petey's best friend
"Buddy" showed up the day after he was rescued and was crying and
looking for him. Buddy has not been found yet, but when he is, we
will need a veterinary appoinment for him, a foster home and a
permanent home for him as well. Ideally, they would be fostered or
adopted together but this may not be possible.

I have more questions, where can I get answers? We are not able to
answer individual questions about his status, but will post the latest
updates
& photos on our facebook page found on our homepage at http://www.nycferalcat.org

How can I apply to foster or adopt Petey, his friend Buddy or another
cat with issues like Petey?
- We are are accepting applications from New York City residents only
at this time.

- WHERE TO EMAIL FOSTER & ADOPTION APPLICATIONS: Please fill out the
appropriate application & email it to: adoption@nycferalcat.org If
you are have problems saving it, you can cut & paste the questions
into the body of an email and type your answers that way.

- All applicants MUST fill out either the foster or adoption
application, both are attached to this email, and email it back to
this address.
Please put the name of the cat(s) you are applying for - Petey (AKA
Bushwick), his friend Buddy, or another cat with issues (there are
several 3-legged cats that need homes right now!).
We can not acknowledge individual applications but you will know we
got it if you received an auto-reply email back immediately.

- Due to time constraints, only the people selected to foster or adopt
will be contacted.

- The foster and permanent home applicants selected will be required
to allow a home inspection prior to his/their arrival.

- Foster homes must be able to provide all cat food and cat litter.

- We do not know if Petey needs to be confined in a cage to facilitate healing.

- Foster homes must be able to foster for however long necessary, it
may takes months to find him a home. Also we can not take him back
while the foster home is on vacation, so this is big committment.

-To be fair, we will go through the applications in the order of who
first emailed about him, and the first person whose references are
available and check out will be chosen.

- We will not announce the name of the foster and the adopter will
only be announced with their permission.

Thank you again for your concern for Petey and his friend Buddy!
