Urgent home needed for large disabled dog

Post by twitchynoses »

Image These are wheels we were originally loaned, now has her own specially made super duper ones.

Sherry was a typical Bulgarian dog. She was used to guard livestock and kept outside in a barn, fed mainly old bread. She is a large dog, part Bulgarian sheep dog. But then one day some sadistic b*****d from the village where she was decided to aim is rifle at her and shot her several times in the back. She was left in agony, unable to move. Her "owners" wanted nothing more to do with her once they knew she was of no use to them and would need medical treatment.

Luckily another lady in the village made a call for help and we were able to arrange for her to be picked up and taken to a clinic in Sofia. Another rescue organisation agreed to cover her immediate vet bills. She was operated on to remove the pellets and see if any of the damage could be reversed. However, the prognosis was not good and the vets did not think she would walk again.

After ten days in the clinic she was well enough to leave but there was no-where for her to go. Her former owners did not want her back, if she was taken back to the village she had come from, without specialist care she would surely die and the only other option given was euthanasia. The organisation that had paid for her operation basically washed their hands of her.

We could not give up on this girl so easily and so transport was organised to travel her 3 hours from Sofia to a foster home with us with TwitchyNoses in central Bulgaria.

She had very large pressure sores on one side from lying in the same position in the clinic, she was very underweight and dirty. She was started on a course of Nivalin, a human medicine for dementia and to try and help rebuild path ways for damaged neurons. A special rear harness was ordered for her to enable her to walk around for short periods and a specialist mobility cart ordered for her. Her wounds were treated and have healed well.

She is a happy soul and has been spayed.

She can wag her tail a little but does not seem to have any sensation in her legs except reflex to some massage.

She can go to the toilet normally although we tend to express her bladder a couple of times a day just to be safe and as easier to do before putting her in harness or wheels.

She is around 25 to 30kg. I am only small (5 foot 1) and can lift her and can put her in her harness lying down and then she gets up and walks fine. It is easier with 2 to get her in her wheels but can be done with one.

It is hoped to get to a foster or forever home somewhere in western Europe where she can have access to hydrotherapy and acupuncture, which have been known to have tremendous benefits in such cases.

There is a video of her here : https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set ... 787&type=3

We really can't keep her for the winter, as we have no where to keep her inside and it gets very cold outside and we must travel for work so we now need to find her somewhere within the next 2 or 3 weeks ideally.

If anyone can offer a good home to Sherry or knows someone that can help please contact me as we are getting desperate as need to find her somewhere before we leave Bulgaria in around 4 weeks. We will sort our transport. Very good with other dogs and no interest in cats.

If living in doors she would need to wear a diaper but compared to other paralysed dogs she has fairly good toilet control.

One of the moderators alerted me to your post and as I read the story, I certainly understood why I received the message.

I lived in Varna for a few years and took in a gorgeous pure white, intact Persian male who suffered the same fate - a 25 caliber bullet lodged in his spine by his previous owner. Sasha had to be expressed and never regained use of his hind legs.

Euthanasia is not practiced by vets in Bulgaria unless there is absolutely no hope for the animal - it's the law. Sherry's story is sad (as was my Sasha's), but more sadly, not uncommon in Bulgaria.

Two vets in Varna, a friend and myself, worked very hard to bring Sasha back from the terrible trauma he suffered and we succeeded - it was the vets in the United States who eventually failed him. I also gave Sasha daily injections of Nivalin and it is a wonderful natural product, basically unheard of stateside (unless you use the synthetic version, but not like the real thing). I still have some if you need it.

I am sending you a private message through this board's message system. Please call the person and explain what happened. I can not make promises, but they may be able to at least steer you in the right direction. As you well know, there are thousands of street dogs and cats, who are daily abandoned by their owners. Some, like yours and mine, were abandoned by Bulgarian farmers/villagers who for one reason or another could no longer care for there "pets", but too many beautiful animals are abandoned by foreigners who are visiting from neighboring countries or summer there. In many cases, the Bulgarians can not afford the very modest fees the vets charge and certainly very few would ever take in a disabled pet.

Please keep us updated on the story and please call the person whose number I am sending you in the private message.

Warm regards,
Leah

Did I read correctly that you found a home for Sherry in the UK??!!!

"FAB NEWS - we have a foster for Sherry in the UK. A lovely lady that has already taken a pup from Bulgaria and worked hard with him. Sherry will be spoiled rotten and we can also look to get her more therapy there. She travels on 30th October." http://twitchynoses.org/

Please let us know ASAP!! :)

Yes, well a foster home until we can find her a permanent home. The lady took another pup from Bulgaria for me last year. A little terror who had had his ears and tail hacked off. She worked hard with him and although there were problems at first, he and her other dog now get on great. Her oldest son wants to study animal care at college and will take some of the responsibility for Sherry. And it will be a good introduction for her to living inside. There is a hydrotherapy place near by for dogs which I hope to get her to and also maybe try some other massage and possibly acupuncture.

She was on a course of Nivalin tablets for around a month when we first got her but not sure what difference they made.
