Outgoing Baby-Cow Dog Seeks Loving Forever Family

Post by ezirbel »

Sweet Odell was very lovingly surrendered after she sustained a back injury. Her family took Odell in for back surgery to repair a ruptured disk, but sadly she never regained the use of her hind end. Odell's previous family felt FBRN could find her a home where she could be better managed.

Because Odell does not have the use of her hind end, she does need her fancy set of wheels to walk around, though she isn't opposed to hopping about through the house! She has received several treatments with the physical therapist and acupuncturist and she does have deep pain sensation; that's a good sign because it might mean with continued therapy she will regain some use of her legs. Due to Odell's injury, she also cannot urinate on her own and therefore must have her bladder manually expressed. Her foster mom will show her new family how to do this, and her new family can get extra lessons at their vet's office, if needed--don't be put off, expressing a bladder is easy!

Odell absolutely loves everybody, especially the big hunky German Shorthair in her foster home. While she loves all dogs and cats she tends to be drawn to bigger dogs. Odell has quite an outgoing personality and isn't shy when meeting new canine friends, so more tolerant dogs in her future home are best. She also gets excited and hops about when meeting the kiddos so older kids would be better, just to insure no one is knocked over or injured--including Odell. Odell has absolutely no reactivity issues, but she can be a bit mouthy while playing. She's working on curbing that behavior and responds very well to gentle reminders.

Don't let the idea of Odell having to be in a cart get you down, because it sure doesn't bother Odell! This girl rarely has a bad day and is, in fact, quite the happy camper. When she's not in her cart, she hops around like a bunny rabbit while playing with her foster fur siblings. She's also a champion yodeler when playing or while trying to get the other pups to play. One of Odell's favorite things are plastic bottles. Her future family will need to be mindful to not leave anything plastic lying around or it will be destroyed in a matter of seconds. She also loves all kinds of toys and enjoys gnawing on dog chews.

Odell is crate trained and will spend time during the day in her crate without any protest. Because of Odell's condition, as much as she would like to be housebroken she just isn't capable. She must have her bladder expressed for her on a regular basis. She does not have to wear a diaper. Also, because she lacks feeling in her hind end, she can't tell when she has to poop. Poor thing is most embarrassed when this happens so her foster family doesn't make a big deal about it.

Odell would easily thrive in any type of home, including first time Frenchie owners. She has lived with kids in her previous home and did great with just about anyone she's met. It would be best if Odell's future home had minimal steps because she must be carried up and down them. Odell would definitely enjoy a backyard of her own and the ability to go on lots of walks to cruise around in her new set of wheels. She has gone several months without being able to experience the joy of a simple walk and a stroll through the neighborhood. Odell would be okay with someone who works outside of the home, as long as she had a midday potty break and dog walker. It is very important that her bladder be expressed regularly to avoid urinary tract infections. Odell would make an excellent office companion given her outgoing personality. She is a social butterfly who loves attention and being with her favorite person. She's very appealling, and she'd make a great shop greeter!

This is what Odell's foster mom had to say about her special girl: "Odell has been a blast to foster and has taught us so much on perspectives in life. She is one sassy baby-cow dog. You can tell some days she gets a little frustrated with her current situation, but those times are quite rare. And really, you have to give her those few times as I can't imagine the adjustment required from being perfectly mobile one minute, to not the next. When she first came to live with us I found myself feeling sorry for her, but it soon became apparent she didn't feel sorry for herself, therefore, neither should I. She's adapted so well and has a fabulous personality that just draws people to her. When we go out people are constantly drawn to her as she bounces around in her cart begging for pets. She's a favorite at the vet's office and at her physical therapists's office. She requires a bit of extra care, but is so appreciative of everything that's done for her. She tries really hard to do all of the things the other dogs do and is even able to get up over small room dividers. She doesn't always make it on her first or second attempt, but she keeps trying until she does. She will also let you know when she'd like up the stairs with a bark or two. She has us well trained! Overall she's been an easy addition to our home and I can't wait for her to find her 'lid'."

Odell will be rolling through the neighborhood with her new set of wheels. If she sounds like your idea of the perfect companion, please plan on picking her up in person in Kansas.

FBRN does not ship dogs as cargo. Except in rare or unusual cases, adopters are expected to pick up their dogs from their foster family. In rare or unusual cases, FBRN may be able to assist in transporting a dog to a volunteer near the adopter's home, but the expense of transporting the dog must be the responsibility of the adopting party.
