ON MEDICAL HOLD

Nacho, a chihuahua mix, was turned into a shelter in Virginia in early January 2024 after her owner was no longer able to care for her. After just a couple days in the shelter, she was pulled by the Blind Dog Rescue and is now in a Virginia foster home.

Nacho was seriously ill when she arrived at her foster home. She was taken immediately to the vet and it was determined she has diabetes, and she may also have kidney disease, liver disease, and/or Cushings. She is now on insulin injections twice a day and her foster home is working with the vet to try to get her blood glucose levels stabilized.

She is also very thin. She can see although may bump into things too; she does have bilateral cataracts and dry eye, and she is on Optimmune. She can hear well. She has advanced dental disease. She is not spayed. She has an abscess on her leg which is being treated with antibiotics. Her age is unknown; the vet considers her to be a senior dog.

Once Nacho has more stable blood glucose and gains weight, consideration will be given to completing a dental and spay. At this time, it would be very risky to do either.

Other than her health issues, Nacho is settling into her foster home. She gets along fine with the four other dogs and doesn’t seem to notice the cat. She loves to eat and she has gained weight – she was 7.5 pounds when she came to her foster home and now is just over 8 pounds but is still quite thin. She is a little sad she is not allowed snacks since diabetic dogs should just eat twice a day. She sleeps quietly through the night in an indoor pen. She is housetrained, although sometimes has an accident because her diabetes is not yet under good control. She doesn’t mind the leash. She likes to be outside to walk around unless it is dark or raining. Then she would rather be inside. She is a little nervous if approached too quickly to be picked up, and then may snap or even gently bite (not breaking the skin) but this seems to be decreasing. But she loves attention from her foster parents, and especially loves her head and her belly rubbed. She also doesn’t mind sitting in a lap! She is good with getting her insulin injections and her eye medication. She has been great at the vet clinic.

Nacho is on medical hold at this time. Hopefully her health issues will resolve and she will be up for adoption very soon! Stay tuned.
