Fish. How does one kill a goldfish?

Post by GabrielDeafBlindPupFamily »

I have no clue, and yet I am so good at it. I recently suffered my 2nd fish kill in my tank of 28 cent goldfish. So! Feeling sorry for the Siamese fighting fish stuck in their Dixie Cups and because Wallyworld never staffs their fish department and yet filet me when I bag my own fish, I walked out with 2 Betas. The male lived for 2 days. He lived in a DIXIE CUP before this beautiful 10 gal. tank! A DIXIE CUP! And I killed him! I have no idea why, but in the meantime, the female is really getting adventurous, exploring, and swimming about, enjoying spreading her fins.

Can two female betas get along alright?

Siamese Fighting Fish

Post by Zorro »

These fish prefer to be in a smaller space, and by themselves. If you put them in a tank together (any sex combination) they tend to fight to the death. You can purchase special containers made for beta fish that have a divider that can be inserted in the container to keep two of them physically separate.

Some folks say that you can keep a female Beta in with other aquarium fish, but it hasn't worked out well when I've tried it. I have a lovely Beta fellow on my desk in a small container and he says he's happy. Also, be aware of the type of diet you're feeding them. Purchase the small pellet food and not the flake food. Feed them a couple of pellets twice daily.

too much water movement is bad for bettas. they need non moving or barely movingg water, they are actually quite delicate.

the goldfish probably got too big and therefore too dirty for your tank. a 10 gallon tank isn't good for more than one or two goldfish once they start getting big.

feed them less (yes, we know the book says twice a day, but once is usually more than enough), take out a littl ewater every week and replace with fresh water, change out your filter cartridge every month.

and try not to be too hard on yourself, mom just killed a big bootiful angelfish. sadly, it happens.

Betas

Post by Dianne »

For almost a year, my daughter has kept a Beta in a small goldfish bowl. We took bets on how long he would live, never thinking that she could feed him regularly. She talks to him daily.

Karen, have you tried talking to your fish?

I treated the water before the fish went in. The female is still alive, after more than 11 days ? :? and the male didn't last 2?

Yeah, I talk to her alright, I tell her, "you better stay alive, little lady," and "What do you want? You hungry? Wanna watch some telly?

She doesn't answer me. She gives me the silent treatment...

Betas prefer to be solitary fish in small spaces. However, I kept a beta for many years with several tetra in a 10 gallon tank. They all seemed to get along fine.

So many things can go wrong when you introduce a new fish to a tank and the health of fish from Wallyworld can sometimes be questionable. To put new fish in a tank it's best to acclimate the fish slowly.

Next time, I would add a little of the treated tank water to the beta cup a little at a time over a few hours until the cup is mostly tank water. You might have to dump a little to add the tank water. This will reduce stress from being introduced into a new tank and acclimates them to the temperature, water hardness, and other factors fish notice.

You can also add stresscoat into you 10 gallon tank. Keep an eye on new fish for fungus and parasites. If you catch it quick, it can be treated.

I used to raise fish for a living and I always talk to them!

Where do you think I learned about

Post by GabrielDeafBlindPupFamily »

pharyngeal teeth? Goldfish have teeth in their throats. We have bred into them the specific genetics that make them look so absurd and as if they are in pain. These fish are worth a TON of $$ and there are GOLDFISH SHOWS! YES THERE ARE!

I was working with my first 'batch' of winners, teaching them the stack, the run down the field and to look pleased and confident when the judge approaches. I had even bought my show leads. :) :) :)

I did have to empty the tank last night to move it, and she's still alive, or was when I left this morning.

I also disconnected the aereator. But have the filter going.

So I can put tetras in there with her? How bout neons? I LOVE neons!

i would NOT put tetras in there

Post by Bendy Kitty »

tetras like acidic conditions, goldfish prefer alkaline conditions. tetras are also tropical and prefer warm water, close to 80 degrees , whereas goldfish are cool water fish adn prefer it around 65.

goldfish only go with goldfish, ideally.

Well, that's what I thought... goldfish and goldfish.
But can I put a neon in with my female beta?

Or should I take the plunge today and get another male?

I keep the lights on in the tank to keep the water warm, because in years gone by, I have not had good luck with heaters and fish. And the heat in the house is at 70 (which is blistering to me).

The female is thriving, active and now 'trained' to come to the top of the tank at suppertime.
