Quaker Parrot Missing Part of Toes

Post by sdrakkan »

Been awhile! Things have been hectic, and in that hectic mess I became the mom to a Quaker Parrot.

Ryzer belongs to a friend of mine who is in the psych ward for the next 6 months. She tried to kill herself while Ryzer was in the car and when they broke the window to get her out, he glided away and disappeared for 3 days. He reappeared but missing part of his toes on his left foot. Lucky it was only that as his foot as his wings were partially clipped at the time.

I have picked up plenty of foot toys trying to encourage him to still use that foot, but even with massaging it I can tell it's still a bit tight. Vet said he will learn to compensate, but I guess I'm just a little impatient. He's young, only 10 months, so I know he will learn.

I was wondering if anyone else has had experience with partial toe amputations on a parrot. And what I can do to help him adapt as well as can be expected.
