piglet born with 3 legs

Post by snooters »

Hello...I am new to this list. My name is Susan & we run a small sanctuary in Ontario Canada. We rescue pigs (potbellies & regular "big" pigs). Our most recent rescue is a month old yorkshire/landrace cross from a factory farm. She was born with 3 legs...missing her front left leg at the knee joint.
She is only 18 lbs now but at maturity (2 yrs) she will be about 400-500 lbs. Right now she is doing great on her 3 legs...as long as the footing is good (grass, carpet) she can run like the wind!!
I am just trying to find someone who will help me get a prosthesis made in the future. Most companies are not interested in helping out a pig...very sad.
If anyone can help out or has info, please contact me.

Thank you.
Susan

I'll post some info tomorrow; my head is about to split. Prostheses have been made for horses and other big critters, so I'd think you could find somebody willing to help a pig. It just might take awhile to find the right person.

The tripod links are general, mostly cat/dog. You should find some horses, etc. represented somewhere, although I don't know of any pigs with a prosthesis. (I just noticed here http://www.handicappedpets.com/pandalinks.htm burros, giraffes, etc. have limbs.) Sadly, many of the links are now broken.

I can't find the other amputee link page...Maybe CarolC or FYI can come up with it.

I always recommend that people try their local orthotists first, since it would be MUCH easier to fix fit problems without a long trip or a series of mail order mishaps. I suspect that, being a helping profession, that prosthetists might be more willing to take on an unusual case than other professions, perhaps.
