Advice Post Spinal Cord Stroke

Post by CatieZ »

Hi, I am attempting to understand the course, prognosis for my 12 year old male, papillon who has had a spinal embolism. It has been 24 hours, when should I see signs of improvement? What is an encouraging sign vs. worsening? I am just so worried for him! What is the most important thing I can do for him right now? I took him to the vet within 5 hours of his leg starting to drag, he is on prednisone, but he is still unable to stand-up. Thank-you for any and all advice.

Hi CatieZ,

Is it just one leg that is affected, or to what extent is he affected?
Is he able to urinate on his own?
Recovery is the norm with spinal strokes, I would not be worried if he is not standing yet.
Spinal strokes do not worsen, they are not like disk problems. All the damage that was going to be done was done at the time of the stroke and in the hours afterward.
How did the vet diagnose him? Did he do any imaging?
