Dog has poop 'leaking' after accident

Our dog has been hit by a car about 2 weeks ago. He has had 3 surgeries and yesterday we could finally take him home.
He can't walk because one of his back legs doesn't really work yet. Although he can move it a little bit. We are training with him a couple of times a day.
The accident caused 3 problems:
- A ruptured blather, this was fixed with his first surgery and seems to be corrected
- A broken hip in 2 places, this has been fixed with the second surgery he has some pins in it now and it seems to hold well.
- A broken tailbone / last part of his spine, they attached it with a triangle
So the last one is the worst because according to the hospital some of his nerves where damaged but some where broken. They didn't know if he is ever to recover from this and he might never be able to hold his pee/poop again.
Now the problem at the moment is there is poop coming out of his anus almost all day. We clean it up all the time (with baby wipes) we change his puppy pads and we sometimes give him a diaper. We are really trying to do the best we can. But (even with his cone on) he keeps licking it and all this wiping seems to make it more irritated.
So I just wanted to know:
1. What can we do right now, should we keep wiping and cleaning him all the time or should we only do it a couple of times per day (say 3 or 4)?
2. Is this maybe also because of the stress etc, will this get any better?
3. Can we somehow improve his situation? Like use different products or do exercises or something else?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
ps. just to let you know, we talked a lot with the hospital about putting him down or not and they told us he could still have a great life. So we are not trying to keep him around just to keep us happy, we really care about him having a good life!
edit: one thing I also should add. All this happened during our holiday. We are dutch and currently in Spain. We have to go back tomorrow, because we already stayed about 2 weeks longer than we planned. The accident happened on one of the last days of our holiday. We are driving, so we planned on driving just a few hours per day
