> How do you think he was exposed?

Yes, I've been wondering that too.
afaik, no other cats have been in the garden recently - they can get in, but they can't get out, and they've learned it's a one-way street.
My neighbours have a cat, and he and Euclid have a long-standing war going on, but the fence keeps them apart. I suppose it's possible that a paw-with-claws could have been thrust through the holes...?
He does catch and eat quite a few mice (I have a compost bin), are mice a vector?
He doesn't much like other people, keeps his distance, so via visitors is doubtful.

Unless he got it from me? I had it last June, but no symptoms since then, and we're pretty careful in this neck of the woods (southern Germany), most people are still keeping their distance and wearing masks. Defo none of the usual summer barbecues are happening.
So, basically, I've no idea.

Interesting. You had it a whole year ago. I suppose if you had an asymptomatic infection recently, it might be too late to do a home test? Not an expert on Covid testing. I wonder if cats lose their sense of smell and taste with Covid. If it was another cat, perhaps they were breathing (or hissing) in each other's faces? I haven't heard anything about mice getting it. That's all we need! Deer get it, that's bad enough.

Apparently mice don't naturally get Covid, they have to genetically modify the mice to use them for studies. So that's out.

Hissing/spitting: hm, hadn't thought of that, only of blood-to-blood, but of course! - air-borne transmission (duh).
/Highly/ likely, they pace up and down either side of the fence being ever so bold and brave, vast amounts of yowling, threats, hissing, etc.
Gosh, I'd better give Heidi (neighbour) a heads-up just in case. They're very fond of their 'orrible cat.
Although possibly some other neighbourhood cat during the night...

I'm seeing the same thing. Articles saying mice and voles could potentially be infected. So far not seeing any saying they've found them yet, but that doesn't mean they aren't out there.

If that's the case, are they going to make a vaccine for cats??

Also, did you read about the cardiovascular effects?

Yeah, she probably would appreciate knowing for the sake of her cat. And her human family, probably, too.

EDIT TO ADD: Just reread your post. The way I understood the articles, mice could not get earlier variants, but potentially could get recent variants, so it has changed. Here is an article about that.

Quite.
Mice and voles are closely related, so if it's in voles, then it's just got to be in mice too.

> Also, did you read about the cardiovascular effects?
I have now. thank you. It's a good thing to know about, given that re-infections are fairly common.

> are they going to make a vaccine for cats??
I wouldn't bet on it, specially given that it's not terminal.
otoh, is another opportunity for the £$%^&* pharma industry to make even more $$s out of us!

Yes, it's an opportunity for financial gain, maybe they would reason it might protect the human family, and really, from what you describe, it is serious. I mean, I'm not a vet, but to me it sounds like he quit eating and drinking, and without close attention and many days of TLC, you could have lost him. They can die from dehydration and hepatic lipidosis. Hepatic lipidosis is not always reversible. Some cats won't cooperate with syringing. You were lucky he's him, and he was lucky you're you. To me it seems like you had a really close call. Glad he's on the mend.
