funny, i've been wondering about the chance of this recurring myself. i was thinking of how hard it all was and how much better it is now and what would i do if i was facing it again. seems like the odds would be in our favor of it not happening again. i took bully for a final checkup at the hospital where they diagnosed his fce 8 weeks ago. they were thrilled to see him WALK IN! couldn't believe their eyes. these folks though weren't like my local vet. they gave me much more encouragement early on, although we all agreed it could go anyway. but when he walked in today they got on the loudspeaker and called all the techs and docs who had interacted with bully in the past to come see him. it was so nice. and they were commending me, which all the commendation goes to bully really. but they said many owners wouldn't go to the extent i did for bully. i can't imagine. he's my dog, always there for me. how could i not be there for him! now i'll just take one day at a time and enjoy the ride. k

sorry to keep bothering you.
The hospital I had to go to ,and will never go again!, never even mentioned check ups or anything else.
What are they doing after this all happened?
My dog walks weird with his left hindleg most, first it was completely dragging and now he walks kinda on the side of it.
He kinda walks likes he's drunk I would say and sometimes I don't hold the sling up too much so to let him walk on his own.
The mornings are worst, the evenings best I would say.
We take it a day by the time I guess, I so much want my "old" walking "buddy" back!

Drunk is how i describe bully's walking now. His left side is pretty good, his right not good at all. The back leg is getting stronger every day though. As for the checkup, they didn't do anything, just wanted to see him, I think. They told me bully will have to do all the work now. No need for further therapy or acupuncture or anything else. Anyway, I believe I'll have my walking buddy back eventually and you will too. We just have to be patient and supportive. Karen

hi puremutt,
i don't know why some vets want to be that way. i thank god every day for my two. if they ever had negative thoughts, they said cricket proved them wrong. they are so supportive now. and about chasing cats>>> well.. my cricket chases them out of yard, ran the mail man out too. lol. in fact the mailman told me" HEY I THOUGHT YOU SAID HE WAS DISABLED? lol. never unestimate the power of recovery, the fighting spirit of our pets, to be the best they can be.
have faith in yours, to heck with vets , trust your pet and your ability to work hard to recover.
your in my prayers. we see miracles every day.
hugs,
connie and cricket

Puremutt - I can understand the feeling. My Tucker is walking like a drunk but his problem is a spinal deformity. while it is distressing to watch him struggle sometimes, in my case I'm just thrilled I have him because orginally I was told he likely had Pug Dog Encephalitis which is almost always fatal. I have been told he isn't in pain also but of course I worry about that. The good news is the specialist said he should have a normal life expectancy. I ordered a wheelchair for him. It's been so great to see all the information about happy dogs in wheelchairs. I've collected some great pictures.

Hang in there!

I am amazed about those wheelchairs that are on this site! Good luck to you!
My dog was doing GREAT 2 days ago and today it's bad again< I guess we have to take it 1 day at the time.
I was in the kitchen and heard a loud BANG, he fell on his side ( luckily he;s in a confined space surrounded by soft edges.
He was laying and heavily breathing and he emptied his bladder , I hope this was only because he was scared. I took him outside, gave him dinner and we played like nothing had happened ( I was still shaking from it).
