Merlie

Merlin was hospitalized Apr 21 for acute renal failure to try to get his values down with 2 days of IV fluids. He was transferred to another hospital after he developed complications. The specialist was able to get his values down but when I took him home I was unable to keep them down with sub-Q fluids and medication. He was hospitalized again but his values did not return to the previous level. Therefore he was admitted to hospice care on Monday morning. Last night he was sitting up enjoying drinking his water. He passed peacefully this morning at 8:05 am. My thanks go out forever to everyone who helped him these past two weeks and made the hospice care possible, and for every atom of kindness extended to us by anyone. Thanks to those here who prayed for him and offered support, your prayers helped us get him the care he needed. Merlie was 14 years 5 months. A gentler soul you could not ask to meet.

Oh, Carol...this news hurts as much as when I lost my Bailey. He was so loved and so well cared for and he knew it. I am glad he went peacefully. He is playing with Bailey, Jude, Possum, Mickey and all of Bendy's buddies and loving you from the Rainbow. We are here for you, friend.

Love,

CarolC, I read this on my lunch hour at work and wasn't able to respond as I would like. ... I am home alone with my tears for you now, and what you have gone through for Merlin's life exceeds anything I have ever imagined. I would think had Andy survived his trauma, I would have walked your walk. No, I would have worked like a maniac for his life. You and Merlin set the bar so high and you and Merlin taught us all so much. You moved more than Heaven and Earth for your boy, your precious boy. You never said never and you never said no. You never said, I can't do this. You never said this is more than I can handle. You never said Merlin, you've had a good run, but boy, I can't do another minute. You never quit. Your mind was working at a thousand times the speed of light trying to figure out a way. A way to lift, a way to roll, a way to make him smile, a way to keep him alive. Your engine lift inventions, your figuring out how to roll him, your constant questioning has given not just Merlin added time and life and love, but all of us. We watched in humble awe as you worked miracles constantly. My heart breaks for you and your boy, who loves his mama more than anything on this planet. Your love for Merlin is a shining star in the sky tonight. Your boy is now right next to that shining star. He will never leave you CarolC. You will transcend matter and life as your boy shoots into his brilliance and you will feel him, you will see him, you will wake and forget. Embrace that moment with all your heart, CarolC because as sure as I am sitting here, that is your Merlin telling you he is alright and hates being away from you, despite the fact he can now run and frolic. It doesn't mean what it will when you find him at the Bridge, jumping in joy at seeing you.
My heart breaks for your loss, CarolC. I love you. We all love you. And we adore Merlin. Please mourn however you must, but know we are right here to help you, to hold you up. We are right here, right next to you. I love you and Merlin, CarolC. You are so loved.

Karen, thank you for putting into words what we all feel, but can't seem to express. Another time I wish we all lived closer - we would be at your door right now, Carol.

Carol, I cannot add much more to what Karen said.

You are a hero.
You are a guardian angel to both animals and people.
You are humble to a fault.
You are an inspiration.

In other words, you are truly someone I look up to and someone who has lent me more than a helping hand when I was down.

Merlin COULD NOT have had a better life or a better home.

Hi Carol,
So sorry for the loss of Merlie, I think back on the pictures you posted and all that you put into your life with Merlie.
Merlie was a wonderful gift on this board. His life with you gave many of us the help we needed. Thank you Carol and Merlie.
Hang in there Carol an know that Merlie lives on in our hearts.

The gift which I am sending you is a dog, and is in fact the most precious an valuable possession of mankind.

Puremutt's exactly right. We all lost our pups again, with Merlin's passing. We grieve with you, CarolC, and Christine and I, if we ever find pet sitters who are as crazy as we are, may just show up at your door. Or we will rent a camper and bring our 'family' with us. You need an actual human being for some comfort. Do you have any family in town? Good friends? You need a caretaker's day to grieve and to rest, to collapse.

Yes, 2 dogs and 7 cats, but there's plenty of room for you guys and your crew!

Thanks to everyone for the kind words.
