My 18 yr old German shepard

Post by smjennif7 »

Hello all my friends...I just wanted to let everyone know that i had to put my 18 yr old German Shepard to "rest" today (May 12, 2007). And i believe that was the hardest decision i will ever have to make. Eva and myself are very saddened but we both know that he is no longer in pain or suffering from hip dysplasia. Cyrus was a wonderful dog and those who had the opportunity to meet him knew this. But the last 3 weeks were very hard for everyone here at home as well as for him. Cyrus, Eva and I will miss you soooo very much and your were our best companion and nothing will EVER take your special place you had in our hearts, may you "Rest in Peace".
This decision has really hit Eva hard so any comments to help her through this would be very appriciated.
Here is a poem that i recieved from a friend.

The Last Battle

If it should be that I grow frail and weak,
and the pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done, for this,
the last battle can't be won.
You will be sad I understand, but don't let
grief stay your hand.
For on this day, more than the rest, your
love and friendship must stand the test.
We have had so many happy years, you wouldn't
want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please let me go.
Take me where my needs they'll tend,
only stay with me till the end.
And hold me firm and speak to me until
my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will agree it is a kindness
you do to me.
Although my tail its last has waved, from
pain and suffering I have been saved.
Don't grieve that it must be you who has to
decide this thing to do.
We've been so close, we two, these years,
don't let your heart hold any tears.

I am so sorry for your loss. What a gift Cyrus must have been in your life, and what loyalty he showed in living 18 years.

I will move your message to the Rainbow Bridge area of our forum so that others may offer their thoughts.

Dear Cyrus, loving, faithful, loving, loyal, strong, loving....
I am so very sorry for your loss. An 18 year old GSD has to be the very oldest, a sign of your love and devotoin. A lifetime of love.
I am so very sorry and I love the poem.
