sores after hemilaminectomy
sores after hemilaminectomy
My 8 year old pug had a hemilaminectomy at the end of Aug this year. He is still not able to walk and drags his hind legs and feet. We have tried wraps and shoes to help the sores but they still will not heal. The physical therapist said to wrap it with neosporin, but they seem to be getting worse. Any advice???

I think you might like to try a drag bag.

I would also crate him for a week (or as long as needed) to give them a chance to really heal.

Re: sores after hemilaminectomy
Where are your pups sores? On his feet or legs? When I adopted Carl in January I had real problems stopping the sores on his feet - you can see them in the picture below.
I finally figured out one type of boot that would actually stand up to being dragged around - RuffWear Grip Trex boots (http://www.ruffwear.com/Barkn-Boots-Gri ... ategory=11 ). They are on the pricey side, Carl's cost $60 for four boots, but put on upside down (i.e. tread on the top of his foot that drags on the ground) they protect his feet, allowing them to fully heal.

Re: sores after hemilaminectomy
Thank you all for your help! We do have a cart for him but I think it's when we leave the house and put him in the pen. I might just have to put him in the crate completely to let the sores heal. I just feel so bad. We have a toy poodle and a foster pug and they are free. I feel so bad when he is in the crate and the other two get to walk around.
The picture below is exactly what the top of his left foot looks like. The right foot is not as bad. I tried other boots on him but they fall off when he scoots around. I will have to give those a shot. The idea of putting the rubber on top is genius!!!

If you have an old baby playpen, that might work in place of a crate, as long as you can get him out without straining your back.

We had him in a play yard but i think he still tries to walk around in it.

Our guy Turbo drags his knees more than his feet if that makes sense. His knees seem to take the brunt of the sores..I cannot find anything other than a drag bag and was wondering if you had any suggestions. Thanks so much ![Very happy :D](./images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif)
