Duck with degenerative joint disease

Post by Jenn1818 »

I have a 5 year old male pekin duck. He has been suffering with arthritis for over a year his hock joint on his left leg is very swollen and just 4 days ago I noticed his left foot is completely curled under I am looking for advice for a splint he would need something under his foot and that comes up over his ankle for support I found something perfect but they don’t make them for adult ducks please any help I would hate to have to put him down since other then that he’s just perfect!

I wonder if you could take a duck boot and improvise something to prevent toe drop. But if it is curling from a contracture, a vet might be able to hopefully treat(?) whatever is going on with his hock that is causing it?

Here is an example of a duck boot.

Here are a couple of examples of booties for dogs with toes curling under, which might provide an idea of how to adapt the duck boot.

Here is one type of duck wheelchair.

If you look in the Birds section you can see several other types of wheelchairs for various kinds of birds.

Here is a link for the Ducks with Disabilities group.

Hope this helps.

P.S. What is the one you found that was not for adults? Would love to know about it. Thanks!

He has degenerative joint disease his vet said no splint or cast would help because it’s nerve damage at this point but I saw a splint that would be perfect the people just haven’t answered back and it’s only made for babies but I’ll take a look at what you sent thanks for your help

Yeah, that's a shame, it looks perfect. When I first saw it I thought it looked big, then I read what they said. I wonder why they don't make an adult size. Did you try also messaging them on facebook maybe?

Splints can help with nerve damage, contractures, etc. Ideally, try to splint before the contracture becomes permanent, because the splint can help hold the limb in the position of function. I can't say that I've ever splinted a duck, though. :D
